I've never been a fan of the "crossing the streams" theory. My SS5's are aimed dead level and straight ahead. I tend to buy lights in pairs with matching patterns depending on what type of lighting I'm looking for. I have a set of Diode Dynamics SS3 Max fogs for short range / maximum peripheral vision. I have the SS5's in the spot pattern for maximum reach. (The fogs shut off automatically when I trigger the high beams / SS5's.) I tried the driving beam lenses, but didn't like the larger amount of peripheral lighting. The SS5's are so powerful that on streets with any kind of reflective street signs, you can pretty well blind yourself with what bounces off of them. Going from driving to spot lenses minimized this effect somewhat. Truth be told, one is better off not using them around town. Just too bright.

The other reason not to mix long distance and fog beams is that it truly messes your vision up. Your pupils adjust to the short range / up close lighting and this negates any ability to see farther down the road. That's the reason you see auto manufacturers setting up OEM fog lights to shut off when you trigger your high beams.
