I finally got my first 21 mpg tank today!. You can see from my fuelly app history below that it has been fairly consistently between 18-20, and a few in the 20.x range, the worst dipped into the 17.x range - but today, after putting 385 miles on the tank, I clocked a 21.0.

Stock TRD Pro, no lift, stock tires, 14.8K miles.

 

Just hauled my boat(2000#'s with trailer and gear) on a tiny trip (100 miles roundtrip) and I was able to get 17 mpg. Then again my runner is stock

 

You guys are giving me some hope. I'm driving from N Idaho to Rapid City, SD in July and going in the ORP which is stock except for Toyo AT3s in stock size. Will drive the almost 900 miles each way non stop except for gas. I know there will be 80 MPH areas on the I90 so it will be interesting what kind mileage I will get. I only have 500 miles on the ORP so far and have been averaging around 17-18 MPG.

 

So you've taken a vehicle that was only rated 16-19 MPG to begin with, lifted it, added bigger/heavier tires, bolted on a whole bunch of stuff that weighs a ton and makes it less aerodynamic, and you're surprised that your gas mileage has dropped?

I'm not mad at you, it's just physics. The factors mentioned by me and others on this thread all contribute to lower gas mileage, plus driving style. A good experiment is to drive like you have a baby bird under the gas pedal and see if your MPG improves.

I mean, that is a pretty drastic drop. I belong to a 2500 Suburban group, and there are guys with 8.1Liters that get better mileage than that.

 

You'll probably do pretty well with all that highway. Pro tip: just because the speed limit is 80 doesn't mean you have to do 80.

I pretty easily get 21 to 22 on road trips with mine with stock size all-terrains.

A regear would probably help you keep that egg balanced on your dashboard. It will be easier for you to be OK with going 55-60mph.

It's going to be a long drive so in this case I think I will go at the limit.

 

I've seen it become counterproductive if you're too soft on the gas. I try to keep mine between 2000-2500 RPM's when accelerating, as that's around where it seems to have a little torque to get you going.

As mentioned above, high speed kills mileage. I've gotten 19.9 on 295's with armor, loaded down. But, 55-65 MPH.

 

The fuel economy always a topic on these I’ve seen since being on the forum and becoming an owner of a 4R last August.
Mine is in stock form. I’m averaging 23mpg on a consistent basis now. It’s my daily driver which is a 90 mile round trip. The drive is conducive to good fuel economy though about 1/2 of it is 60mph highway and other half is town 35-45mph.
What I’ve learned as the largest contributor to improving my mileage is looking ahead in the road and letting it coast. It’s heavy and coasts a long way and slow to scrub speed. Its a very different driving habit than normal and has taken awhile to figure it out and be consistent. My other car is a Corvette so….

as for the fuel- the higher octane is a waste of $ . That fuel is for higher compression engines and the higher octane helps with pre-detonation of the fuel - that’s it. The fuel sold is not all equal across stations. You want to buy from stations that have what’s called “Top Tier” gasoline. Otherwise the other stuff is what starts to build up and cause problems—- ask me how i know.

These run on a factor of Smiles per gallon anyway and Calculating it otherwise isn’t an accurate measure for these mechanical beauties!

And, I would be willing to bet a lot of the very knowledgeable people here would say "Yep, that mpg makes perfect sense based on what you are lugging around..." Assuming of course the mods are as described...

Boy am I happy with the change in MPG with the summer weather. During wisconsin winter, I was getting 16mpg on my usual mixed country road/urban 15-20 mile commute. Now Im getting 19mpg !!! That almost offsets gas price increases!

 

The screen that provides a compass, speed limit, and road being driven is where it’s at. That little screen has saved me a few times driving through rural Oregon where the speed limits changes from 55 to 25. Still handy around town too.

 

11mpg does seem really low, even with the mods mentioned. But maybe so.
My 21' ORP in stock form, with 13,000 miles is averaging 19.7-20.3mpg. Combination city/highway driving. Based on what others on this Forum mention, this seems about the norm.

 

Yeah I guess I’ll just wait for the Tesla to tow around all my gas hogs..

 

By being in 2 wheel drive I meant just power to the rear, for a example my 2001 grand Cherokee had Quadra drive, a full time 4 wheel drive system with the option of 4 low and neutral. It had limited slip differentials front and rear, on that vehicle the front didn’t receive any power unless the rear wheels sensed any slip. The second the rear wheels sensed slip the transfer case locked or whatever and sent power to the front differential. I loved that system.

 

I never reset mine either, almost at 100 hours since Christmas and have a average of 16.7, most of my tanks average 17-18 mpg.

 

I'm still recovering from my last trip from LA to Mammoth back in March with with 5 people + gear....

 

90% freeway on this trip odometer, Southern California, some hills, rarely hitting 65.

 

2020 SR5 stock wheels and Dueler HT tires set at 33psi. No mods at all. The lowest gas mileage I've ever had was 18mpg in the city....so it is possible. I get 23mpg highway. Teslasbigigcarbonfootprint....my hats off to you for being the best at it so far. 27mpg is awesome!

 

That was one series of long freeway drives.

As Costco gas is now slightly above $6 a gallon, my mileage has sunk badly. I am wondering if I should speculate that the minimum octane rating may have dropped. I remember one gas station, here in Southern California, had state tested at 90 octane for their regular gas. So, they were meeting and exceeding the minimum octane requirements for San Diego County Weights and Measures.

My combined city, 80% freeway and not speeding, about 19.8 to 20.1 miles per gallon. I have been checking my air pressure a lot. It has also gotten warmer and slightly muggier around here. I understand that fluid dynamics might dictate that I have more to drive through and it's creating more resistance.
