I am wanting to change from the stock Hwy. Tires that came on the 4Runner. I have reading and reading about tires and do not seem to find a good tire, rugged look, will not decrease the gas mileage and is decent for following: I live in Colorado North of Denver and encounter snow in town and during ski season driving up the hwy and mts. Also need for once or twice a year to MOAB Utah for a little off-road. And of course just regular driving to California or Florida on the hwy. I was told the T/R BF Goodrich was good although they no longer make the less expensive with less ply than the KO2 now offered. I also have been told they have 10ply and decrease gas mileage a bit. My gas mileage even on the hwy is not great so I am not thrilled about getting a tire that brings it down.

    I have looked at a Cooper T/A, Nittro T/A and a Bridgestone T/A
Anyone think these would ride better and not affect the gas mileage but would have a rugged look without sacrificing the ride on the HWY to any great extent.

I am exploring buying them online since cheaper and some offer free shipping to a tire store in your area to put them on. Sounds like a good deal but may have some draw backs.

However it may be like lenses for a camera, there is no way to hit all bases with one tire!

Thanks ahead for any advice on this subject. I have to make a choice soon since we go skiing the end of next week.

Answer these and we'll get you taken care of...

Do you want to stay stock tire size?
What do you use your 4Runner for? Highway? Off Road? Forest Trails? Rock Crawling? What percentage of time on road vs off road?

Yes stock size since I don't want to install lifts etc.
Highway primarily, some snow driving up to ski slopes, need tire with good snow ability
Off Road such as MOAB Utah sometimes will be rough enough road to scratch the front guard plate on the front.
Forest Trails listed in 4Wheel book but in reality not that rough except a few.
Therefore 75% on improved dry roads - Hwy.
25% Snow, rough roads, off road.

    Thank you wlamore

I've had the Toyo A/T's, Goodyear Duratracs, Cooper Discoverer AT/3's, BFG KO2's, and now the Falken Wildpeake AT3W's.

The only tire I've had fail out of that entire list was the Duratracs, after I ran over a small piece of metal that caused the tire to compress to the point of splitting the sidewall. Because of the weak sidewall I can't recommend that tire. The Toyo A/T's wore out quick and didn't really stand out. The Cooper Discoverer AT/3's were extremely quiet, had excellent dry and wet grip, and long life. Never had them in the snow. The BFG KO2's were quiet, had good wet and dry traction, and were good in the snow. My current Falkens in my opinion are a superior tire to the rest of that list. They have great wet and dry traction, are fantastic in the snow, and come with a 55k mile warranty. Another plus is that they are available in SL load, which is the lightest load available for a SUV/Truck tire keeping weight down and increasing mileage. They also look pretty cool as well. I think they would fulfill your needs excellently.

Here's a link so you can check them out. Tirebuyer.com is an excellent website to deal with.

Here's what they look like mounted.

Thank you, I checked Tire Buyers and they show 2 models. One is $125 each +- with free delivery
The second ones show it as a 10 ply at $150 + or - Where does it show it is a SL load or do I have to call on Monday to Tire Buyers and ask if they have that tire in the SL Load. The lower priced tire shows same 55,000 rd warranty but no rating of the ply I could find. The 10 ply may be to stiff for what I want.

I had the BFG KO2s on my former Tacoma. I liked them. They were quiet, had about a 1-2 average mpg loss, and satisfied me. I however didn't own the truck long enough to form a tread life opinion. They are expensive though. From what I understand they now make a C load tire and not just a D so that would def. help with the weight. I have the Goodyear duratracs on my work truck and although they have good grip, I've had them about a year and they've worn terribly. Uneven wear and I've already used about 1/2 the usable tread up. Couldn't recommend them. I'd def. take a look at the Cooper A/T-3. Hankook Dynapro AT-M won the Consumer Reports A/T tire test. Those Falkens look nice.

Sorry I fixed the link above, somehow I linked my for sale thread. The link now reflects the correct load range I was talking about (SL).

Any tire with a 'rugged' look or longer/wider/abnormal tread will decrease mpg, even snow tires. It sounds like you are in the market for an all terrain tire in my opinion. I feel the bfg ko2s in a 265/70/17 C load would give you everything you need with only a mild 1-2 decrease in mpg. I had 275's ko2s E load on my 4runner and only noticed a 1.8 mpg decrease. I live in Lakewood, CO and took those through snow storms and over 13,000 feet many a time.

BFG's k02's are the real deal. Had duratracs and was not impressed. I 'am hard on tires however.

    Thanks Mr. PVT Pablo.
I just purchased 4 of the
Falken Wildpeak A/T3W in the SL load for the 4-Runner. Bought them Peerless tires who I have know and purchased tires for years. They were about $25 more that what Tirebuyer would charge but they give me a lifetime free rotation, balance, fix flats free etc. Never had to wait more than 15 minutes to get rotation or flat fixed. That may not sound like paying another cost per tire but since these need to be rotated about every 3-5 thousand miles it adds up quick in the lifetime of the tire. I also bought the extended 3 yr. warranty for each tires at $22 per tire. I have never used these tires and I felt with these guys behind them, they will go to bat for you even if a bit over the 3 yrs.

Anyway just drove home and the feel great, it is snowing now and we go skiing again soon. I will find out how well they perform in the snow. If these had been the LT tires I found that no company but one would issue a road hazard policy. Not sure why but since this class still is rated as a passenger car tire even though it has the snow hazard rating, they will warrant them. That with the 55,000 mile warranty from Falken and the Road Hazard (I hit a juniper stump in a field once and it instantly cut a whole in the sidewall). I had just bought the tires at SAMS club and they instantly replaced it under that warranty. Sidewalls I suspect are always a weak spot. Of course if you get some punk kid with a knife in a parking lot slicing tires, I don't know if they would cover them. There is where my guys at Peerless might be able to go to bat for me. Total for 4 mounted with road hazard $815.65 total. BF Goodrich would have been near a $1000!

    tires, led bar,
I have to install Ko2s mounted on 17inch toyota mags on the 4runner i'm picking up tomorrow to finish the winter, they are off my Tacoma, thanks for posting these Falkens and the info, they might look better on the 4runner and i would just leave them on all year, they do look very good i agree too, i still haven't researched what the max tire size is and lift options are for my 4runner

    Hi

the Falkens don't come in 275/70/17 as far as I could found out, either 265 or 285. As I will have a little lift, around 2", and don't want to run 285, I was wondering how the stock 265s would look like with the lift, i.e. not too small? I know the BFGs come in 275, but they are quite heavier then the Falkens and cost a view bucks more. Did anybody have that lift/stock tire combo and could provide a picture?

    Thx from snowy Ontario

My apologizes. It's looks incredible. Thank you. We use the roof as our deer stand. Just wait in the prone position, maybe take a nap (lol) we like how it blends in with the winter environment. CVT tent is next on the mods list.

Very nice combos guys, thank you for the pics.
I assume no one would keep their 265 when having a moderate lift up to 2.5"?

Additional question. Would the 275 fit sofar on the stock suspension without rubbing? I have not decided on the lift yet, i.e. fox, king, OME, but need better snow tires here.

It does not rub on the TRDP They sit just a tad bit higher than the Sr5's. No issues at all. Now the 285's will rub just a bit on the mud flaps but they can be easily trimmed.

ok, I got the KO2 in 275 and they look and drive great. No rubbing and the stock suspension is also superb. Maybe a very little bit stiff on bumps, but really nothing which requires an change right now :)
