Howdy fella's and gals... Wondering if anyone has put the new 2021 LED headlights into their 2017 and up 5th Gen's? I have a 2017 Pro and want to upgrade the complete headlights to the new 2021 headlights. Looks like they should just bolt right up. How are the connectors though? Thoughts? Waste of time and money? Thanks in advance for the input!

I don't like the LED highbeam on new ones. It uses the same low beam projector as high beam and the bulb on reflector is DRL only. Right now I'm messing with wires to get a highbeam bulb on that reflector and use DRL wiring to raptor style grill lights.

With older housings its so easy to swap halogens to good LEDs for so much better light output.

I don't use the high beams at all with my Baja LED fogs and light bar. What are your thoughts on the low beams? That's really what I'm after. I have LED bulbs in the current OEM's and they will not adjust down and blind every car that passes me. What are your thoughts?

According to the recent news, all 2022 4runner trims will get this bi-low/hi led beam that the 2021 limited/pros have.

Low beams are good. But not bright as GTR Ultra2 LEDs I had on my TRD ORP.

Yeah I hear that. The LED bulbs that I have in the OEMs currently, forget the brand, are hella bright. Really nice actually. Just can't move them down at all due to how big the bulbs are with the fans on the back.

What LED bulbs are you guys running that are really good, bright, good color and you can still adjust the cut off if needed?

    1. Yes, people are able to retro-install the 21 headlights into older 5th gen trucks. You'll have much better luck using the single LED headlights with the original halogen high beams, as the bi-LED lamps in the Pro/Limited are a little more difficult to integrate. Plus, the projector high beam sucks a lot more than the old-style reflector (large reflectors are much more efficient than little projectors). See for info on the swap.
    2. Interesting to hear that Toyota might consolidate all models to the bi-LED headlights. Makes sense from a simplification standpoint but the high beam performance is worse.
    3. I don't recommend using off road lights on the road in lieu of good high beams. One, you run the risk of getting popped and ticketed for it. Two, fumbling for a switch is not as intuitive as using the high beam stalk for quick dips against opposing traffic. Inconsiderate and dangerous to other drivers if you can't switch off quickly. Might I suggest a set of street-legal auxiliary high beams, triggered by the high-beam toggle? I detail mine in this post.
    4. Use halogen bulbs in halogen housings. The drop-in LED bulbs seem cool and bright but their focus is terrible, meaning your distance vision will suffer. I recommend looking into this post on Tacomaworld to see why. LED lighting can be fantastic, but only when the optics are designed for it. Your halogen headlamps are not.

Does anyone have any info on how to retrofit 2022 Pro headlights to a pre 2019 model?

    Update:

You can now swap in newer headlights to your 14-20 halogen 4Runners using this easy adapter! Works for both low-beam and bi-LED OEM headlights.

They are almost twice as bright as H9 bulbs in stock halogen assemblies, and nearly 3 times as intense as the factory H11 bulbs. And they are much better than any aftermarket drop-in LED bulbs, which are not legitimate products.

Does this take place of swapping the plugs from the 2 headlights, and swapping the red and white wires?

Yes. With these, you do not need to de-pin and disassemble stock headlight connectors. Just snap everything together and go.

Nice! The drl's and high beam still use the center bowl without any other mods?

Correct, your factory DRL/high-beam bulbs (9005) will work exactly as they do now. Toyota did not modify the reflectors or bulbs for the new trucks, they just changed the wiring that controls them.
