Roof Top Tent and Low Garage Clearance

    Does anyone have a solution for mounting and removing a RTT when the 4runner barely fits without anything on the roof? I would love to get a RTT, but do not want to keep it on all the time. I would love to store it while not using it.

    I live alone, dont have access to fork lift, taller garage door is not possible. Haha do I need to make friends with my neighbors?

    Yes I’d say. Lol. There are some pretty slim rtt like the gfc just depends on ur actual clearance.

    Sounds like a perfect excuse to expand the garage. :notsure:

    You could fashion a hoist to lift the RTT off the roof and then lower it onto a cart of some sort. You'd need a sturdy tree or some sort of structure that's taller than your 4Runner+RTT.

    I used to use a Harbor Freight engine hoist with the arm extended all the way out to remove/install my Jeep hardtop by myself. That would work if you had a place to store the engine hoist...

    Are they that heavy where one person can't R&R it by themself? Or is it that your garage space is too limited to accommodate storage?. Just asking?

    I don't know of if you have the clearance or not, but they make pulley sytems that attach you rafters. I use them for my kayaks to get them up and out of the way.

    You will find that your truck also does not fit into many parking garages, but depending on where you live in the country this may not be an issue.

    I’m curious to see what percentage of roof top tent users use them more than once.

    The lightest RTT is 80lbs. Most 2 person RTTs are 100-120 lbs....not easily moved around by 1 person. You're going to likely have to use a ground-based hoist like one person posted a link to or a lift system mounted to your roof, like these:

    How much space is between your roof rack and garage door header/top?
