    Hello everyone,

As most of you have experienced, the T4R is a brick in the wind after many mods (lift, larger tires, drawer system, etc.). I've recently been looking at options to increase my 4runner's power, and after looking around, it seems there are three options:

Are the last two the same? It seems like the Toyota Performance Chip seems to be the most cost efficient, but is it an actually viable option, or is it a gimmick?

Only $90 to increase MPG up to +5, and add 60 horsepower? Seems too good to be true... Wondering if anyone has ever purchased this, and what were the results?

Also would love to hear input on people who have done the re-gear or have gotten their engine tuned. What were the costs for you?

If you don’t want a sloggy 4Runner, I’d avoid all bolt ons and chips and just save up for the Magnuson supercharger kit which comes with tuning.

Look into the OVTune (OrangeVirus). They are a very reputable company and I had their flash tuning done to my Tacoma. IMO, definitely increased some HPs and helped just a lil bit with MPGs. OrangeVirus finally came out with a flash tune for the 4Runner. Have yet to purchase it. With the installation of my 315s tires, I am definitely going to regear and more than likely try out the OV tune again.

For $90, the Thorton Performance chip won’t break the bank. You should try it out. The reviews state the product is outstanding.

I'm running 4.56's and OV tune. 285's with dual swingout rear bumper, SSO front winch bumper, and RSG sliders. Consistent 16's in town and 18-19 on the highway here in the NM desert
@ 4,000 ft. Really responsive and fun to drive.

Ov tune has not released a tune for 2020+ 4runners yet. I hope they come out with one soon, i had ov tune on my tacoma and it made a huge difference imo

for those interested in N/A tuning, YotaWerx Tuning offers arguably the best tune by far for the N/A/ 5T4R. We've received shout-outs for our achievements with the 4R from VFTuner (developer of OVTune), and have very satisfied customers in multiple countries.

When support for 2020+ 4Runner is added to VFTuner software, we can offer our tune for those model years. It has to do with Toyota going to a gen2 ecu with the tech refresh/update which has tighter security encryptions. We receive daily inquiries about our tune for the 2020+ 4R and are excited to provide support asap, which should be soon. VFTuner has indicated that the capability will be added to the VFT software in the near future.

just this weekend, this user just got his 4runner tuned by one of our networked tuners.

As soon as support for 2020+ ECUs is made available, our already proven tune for the earlier MYs will be ported over and made available. Keep an eye on our YW thread for updates.

Thats awesome... from your other thread with the dyno charts, look impressive with getting the power in low rpms, that might help turn 35s :)

I see this is an older thread not trying to hijack it but after doing a search I couldn’t find anything on a company called master yota they are right in NJ not far from me. So far they have been the only company to get back to me saying they will tune a 2023 4Runner. Does anyone know anything about them ? Good bad or indifferent?

Idk anything about Master Yota but I represent YotaWerx Tuning as co-owner and we have 2023 4Runner support.

I have experience with both YotaWerx and Overland Tailor Tuning. I would recommend either one. Noticeable improvements in throttle response and drivability as well as a slight gain in power. I plan on getting my 2023 tuned soon. Just waiting on the supercharger tunes to be available.

Like mentioned elsewhere, we do have Magnuson and ProCharger tunes available for the Dual VVTi 1GR (and Single VVTi 1GR/2GR-FKS). If you need assistance we're happy to help! info@overlandtailor.com

There are no "chips" available. That is not how modern ECUs are tuned. Hit up Overland Tailor in the post above yours for tuning options. Depending where you are at there are local tuners that can flash an OTT tune on your 4Runner or you can get the VFTuner software from OTT along with the tune file and flash it yourself.

After running across a customer with one of the Thorton Chips, the KDMax team actually picked one these up and tried it. Unfortunately, after a few hundred miles of driving with it in place (the manufacturer says it takes about 150 miles to do its thing) it produced no noticeable change in vehicle performance. This wasn't a surprise really. A true ECU tuning service is really the best option available for true performance gains. If the KDMax Pro v10.0 offering interests you, shoot me a message. I'd be happy to address any questions you might have and help you locate a tuner in your area!

What effect would tuning have on a 2023 warranty? extended warranty?

While any aftermarket modification has the potential to impact warranty, the KDMax team has provided services to thousands of Toyota Tacoma, Tundra, and 4Runner owners all across the country, and we've not had a single person report any issue at the dealership related to their tune. The tuning process does not change the truck's ECU ID, which is how the Toyota Techstream software (the dealer's diagnostic application) identifies the ECU. This means it appears to stock to the software. My own Tacoma is still under warranty, and I've had no issues at the dealership. I even had my dealer refer a customer to me for tuning! I tuned his truck with less than 300 miles on it!
