I'm about to get a Gates kit (pump, timing belt, etc) and have my shop replace the belt and pump. I was wondering if there's anything else I should have my mechanic look at when he does these.. like, any "while you're in there" things to check or do?

My advice is to pay a little extra and get the aisin kit. Gates are junk especially the water pump. They’re use to be quality parts that gates put together but lately in the past 3-4 years , they been using cheap china stuff and piecing them together for overprice.
I had to redo mine with aisin after 60k miles with Gates.

Agreed TOYOTA or TOYOTA supplier parts only! (Aisin, Mitsuboshi, etc)

Thanks for the heads-up. Is there anything else I should have the mechanic do while he's at it? I'm at about 215k miles.. I seem to recall a maintenance schedule someone posted a while back but I couldn't find it again.

If youre in there the thermostat is an easy replace too. Also the accessory belt for when you put all that back together. Otherwise just put eyes on everything. Barring something egregious these engines last, you should be fine.

On the third gen, I replace the belt, pump, and ALL timing pulleys\bearings. I do the tensioner every other t-belt change along with cam and crank seals.

Last time I was in there, I replaced my leaky valve cover gaskets. Dunno if you guys have that issue on the 4th gens.

Make sure to replace all the belts and hoses while you have everything apart.

The AISIN kit is all Toyota OEM parts and includes everything you'll need except for Toyota's FIPG (Toyota Seal Packing 1282B #08826-00100) which is needed for the top rad hose outlet. I wouldn't skimp here either as a lot of other premium gasket sealers don't fare so well with Toyota's pink super long life coolant.
