So I was rear ended last week by a big ol' dodge ram. There was an accident in front of me, I managed to stop in time, he did not. I was hauling two mountain bikes on my 1up hitch rack at the time so the rack and the hitch took the brunt of the damage. The rack was bent severely and the hitch sheared off. If it weren't for the rack, I'm certain my truck would've been totaled.

Anyway, the impact pushed the bike into my tailgate, shattering the trim piece above the license plate. It also put some relatively minor scratches and dents on it. They will replace the rack directly. For the replacement of the hitch and the repair of the tailgate, the insurance company has offered me $1100.

Getting the small scratches and dents repaired should be straightforward enough. I need to replace the trim piece which should be a challenge, don't know where to find the part.

I'm weighing my options when it comes to the hitch. The sole purpose of the hitch will be for using a bike rack. I believe my previous hitch was a curtis class III. It worked great but I could not fit my spare 265-75-16 tire in the factory spare location with the hitch mounted.

I am considering an aftermarket bumper with a hitch built in but I don't care for tube style bumpers all that much. The only pre-fabbed bumper I can find is the trail gear for $300 and I don't know of anyone that does custom fab in my area. (Charlotte NC). Something like this with a hitch welded on would be ideal. http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=47473.0

1100 doesn't seem like nearly enough to fix tailgate, trim, paint, bikes, bike rack.

The 1100 I put in is solely for the hitch and the tailgate repairs. They fully reimbursed me for a new rack and I'm working with them on values for the bikes. If 1100 is sufficient, I'll re-open the case with them.

Ahhhh ok. Just making sure the insurance company was being silly.
