For you guys who carry, where have you found the best place to hide/mount your pistol in the T4R? If mount, what kind?

Yeah, I've seen that, but I don't leave my gun in the vehicle. I've seen magnetic mounts but don't want to go through all the trial and error.

 

Check out the Desert Does It MMP mounts that you can get with the Seat Jackers. It provides a metal bar across the underside of your seat that you can mount a holster on or you can attach a magnetic holder to.

I am getting one of these clip-on holsters, and will clip it to the big plastic molding piece that contours around the front of the seat. A test fit without a holster, I think there is enough room/mounting space to get it mounted to the right of my knee, around the right corner of the seat.

Be sure the holster you buy will not snag your front sight.

However if I have need to disarm because of a restricted area I have a kydex holster Velcroed in center console using 3M 30lb material.

I would add that you should review your State laws as well. Here in South Carolina, for vehicles, there is no CWP or other requirements except the firearm must be in glove box or center console. Having a CWP does change some of these requirements in South Carolina.

Many people that get arrested and charged with violating this statute make the mistake of having a handgun in 1 of 4 places. Under a seat, between the console and the driver’s seat, in the map pocket of the door, or in a pocket behind a front seat. All of these places are in violation of the statute and are illegal.

If the person has been issued a concealed weapon permit pursuant to Article 4, Chapter 31, Title 23, then the person also may secure his weapon under a seat in a vehicle, or in any open or closed storage compartment within the vehicle's passenger compartment;

Every State had different laws and I can't emphasize enough to review where you live and what States you travel through. I don't want my response to thread to be interpreted as a political discussion. I'm only stating that State laws differ and giving an example the one I live in.

Otherwise I have a console vault. What I don't like about these holster mounts is they increase the chance of getting out of your vehicle and leaving your pistol behind.

If going on a long road trip, I find a smaller pistol (Glock 43X or Ruger LC9S Pro) is more comfortable to carry OWB. It doesn't dig into me like a Glock 19 sized pistol. I have been known to put that size pistol with a pocket holster in the cargo pocket of my pants / shorts.

In Missouri - it's really rare that I go somewhere where I can't carry.

 

I’ve about quit carrying anything big. I just don’t like wearing clothes that will conceal a full sized 1911 or similar, and I’m not an open carry guy. Like DRobs, I carry mine on my person nearly all the time. I mostly either carry a Kimber Micro 9 or Mako, depending on what I’m wearing. I only use one holster.

if I know I’ll be leaving my pistol in my truck, like last night at a small concert venue bar, I carry something cheap like a S&W Bodyguard. They’re just get-off-me guns but from home to there and back, that’s all I’ll need. Right now I’m in the market for a steel rifle vault for the back that I can secure an AR or similar in. If anybody knows of one that doesn’t cost an arm and leg let me know.

 

I just want to share one more perspective. My dad was a carpenter and I was raised a carpenter. I wouldn’t drive a nail with a sledge hammer or rip plywood with a hand saw. Guns, handguns and long guns, are just tools. I’m not carrying a Bodyguard into a church where I might have to shoot 75 or 100 feet. I’m not using a handgun of any kind as a home defense weapon. Pick the tool to accomplish the task at hand.

But seriously, those are awesome add-ons. The inch or so that it jacks up the front of your seat actually (to me anyway) makes the seat more comfortable, too. Better support for the underside of my thighs. I put them on both seats and even did the rear jackers too, so now I have room under my front seats to store things (tool rolls, etc). I have an Element 50 Fire extinguisher on the MMP under the passenger seat. Very handy, but a bit pricey.

 

I bought Smittybuilt Jeep Vault and mounted it in the back of my 4Runner. I would not recommend it.
The drawer was loose in the vault and constantly made file drawer rolling sounds. I'm drawing a blank on the tie down name but they loosen up with every bump and the squeaks they make will drive you insane.

AR15's I store under the back seats.



With an uncased smooth sided AR (no light / wide optic), the seats will lock down. The seats won't lock down otherwise (cased optics, lights, etc) but it still works just fine. I've had people sitting on top of my AR15 and not knowing it.

You could run a cable lock through the ejection port out the magazine well and around one of the seat legs.

Mine sits on my hip. I would rather just be aware of the places I can't take it, than leave the vehicle and forget it.

So. I’m new here but in my f250 and all me previous vehicles I always mount right under the steering wheel. I haven’t investigated but for the 4Runner yet tho. Now that I think about it my normal magnet Mount would probably not work with the off road activities. So. Glad I found this thread to make me think that through.

For those times when I HAVE to leave it in the vehicle, I definitely want it out of sight. Seems like it would be visible under the steering wheel.

 

I guess I should specify when I’m in the car sitting I don’t keep it in my waistband. I’m small it’s u comfortable really. But with the height of my truck and the window and windshield tint, you can’t even see me sitting in it if I do go to a bar or venue and can’t carry I do empty and clear it and lock it up in the center console. Just to make it somewhat harder if anyone did break in. At least try to in my mind

 

4Runner related, not political.
Most that have carried for any length of time will accumulate different holsters. I use this one based on weather, how long I will be in vehicle and driving. This one is very comfortable and easily adjusted when attached to a sturdy gun belt. Either steel core or thick leather. Right hip, as everyone knows, can be a bit problematic with existing seat belt hardware. This works for me based on my body type, being right handed, situation, and what I'm doing which is driving for over couple of hours.

My g19 just sits in holster in driver door cup holder. Don’t feel like getting fancy with mounts

Just an alert to all! Many of you already know this, however, put a lot of thought into this thread. It might just save your life!!
The world is a dangerous place now. Don't assume anyone is going to protect you. I will not get political, however, those in the know, can relate.

 

With the gun in place, I assume you wouldn't be able to move the seat up, correct? Intentionally or without thinking.

 

The way that one is set, yes, but you have room to attach it lower so you have some movement. But I will tell you, I'm a short guy and the way that MMP attaches, the front of my seat is behind that panel enough that I can attach stuff and not hit the items with my seat.

I read this article the other day. And then I realized that with this mod in place, you won't be able to lay your rear seat backs all the way down. That's a deal breaker for me.

 

Just don’t leave a gun in your truck. A) That is one of the fastest/easiest ways to get your gun stolen and directly into the hands of a criminal B) if you encounter someone in the act of going through your truck the odds of you getting shot with your own gun go WAY up C) that gun is not providing you or anyone else any security while it is sitting in the truck; it is just about the dumbest, most irresponsible place you could leave an unattended firearm. Don’t do it.

Good points! The only time mine is left in a locked glove box, inside my locked vehicle is when I'm running errands and go inside somewhere that guns are prohibited. Even then, it's a brief stop.
