Lift first? Tires First?

We are starting the process of looking for new tires and looking in to lifts. We have a 2017 TRD ORP. We do want to do a small lift, but we also need will need new tires soon. We’d like 275/285s AT (we’ll be moving from Ca to IN so snow rated)that won’t break the bank. Seems like Wildpeak AT is what we’re leaning towards. But should we do the lift first? Would 275s rub without a lift if we don’t trim the mudflaps or modify the body? We’re pretty new to all this…HELP!!!

 

Lots of threads on this, 275’s shouldn’t be an issue. With 285’s you may rub, depends how good of an alignment you get and then do some minor wheel well work.

 

275’s are a “maybe” when it comes to rubbing. I’ve heard some people have no issues, some people rub. Even if you rub, it’s a simple mod to push the fender liner forward. I stayed with the 265’s because of weight. I don’t off-road.

I did tires first. Stayed with the 265s in a falken wildpeak.

I have been looking at lifts, the more I think I will hold off, and just do a spacer level for the front. Easier on the wallet and I can start saving for a lift if I decide to go that route.

 

What wheels do you currently have on there?

Do you know the offset?

 

I’m not sure what your mission is but I bought my 4Runner to go camping in the backcountry. I went with all-terrain tires, BFG KO2’s in stock size, first with stock suspension. That’s a very capable combination for what I do. I recently did get a lift with 285 size tires and that’s a great combination but you will take a hit on gas mileage.

 

You'll take less of a mpg hit with sl rated or 4 ply all terrains just cause theu are a bit lighter, mate them with a set of wheels that weigh less then 28lbs(each) and you'll be golden, with my 285 set up I'm averaging 17-18 mpg and my foots on the gas pretty much all times

 

Currently have 265/70/17 w/nankang crosssport tires. Tires we bought it with. We’ve got the black TRD pro rims on it which will stay. We mostly want to do a lift bc we like the look and for some off roading.

 

Did you need to do any body chop to make the 285 for without rubbing? Or just the lift.

I have the Toytec Aluma 2.5 with the SPC upper control arms. The only trimming we did was about 1/4 inch of plastic in the front of the tire and we removed the front mud flaps. I did take it off road on our camping trip to the Big Bend and there was no rubbing. I’m no expert, but my understanding is that the SPC UCA’s allow them to change the castor enough so that it doesn’t rub.

 

Right now I'm running 285s on stock sr5 susp. And yes it rubs, I trim and moved the inner fender around so now its not rubbing on the plastics BUT it does rub the body mount on full lock, I knew this would happen with my -12 offset. But my 5100 and jba uca are ordered, which might fix the rub if not ill chop it

 

With Pro wheels and your particular truck, you will probably rub with 275's and 285's. Your lift doesn't really factor into this because you would still rub with the Pro wheel offset and a bigger tire whether you are lifted or not. Rubbing mostly comes from scrub radius on our trucks.

To fix this, you would need to do the fender liner mod (super easy) and have the correct alignment (caster around 3.5 or higher).

If you lift your vehicle north of 1.75", then you will not be able to get your stock UCA's above 3.5 degrees of caster, in which case you could start rubbing to the rear of your wheel well on the mudflaps or body mount. That rub can be fixed as well. Not as easy as the fender liner mod, but not too bad either. Body mount chop is probably best left to a professional unless you know how to weld.

Aftermarket UCAs allow you to increase your caster with higher lifts to potentially avoid the body mount chop and mudflap rub.

 

I'd go with lift and tires at the same time. Especially if you want to go bigger tires. Little less labor when getting all the work done (if you're shopping it out).

 

Lift first… Westcott Designs is highly recommended!

How about lift, wheels and tires all at once!! Finally did it!! Rides so smooth now. Can’t wait to take it out in the dirt.

How do you like the Aluma 2.5 kit?

 

I have a 21 Pro and want to swap out my 265 Ridgegrapplers for 285 Ridgegrapplers and I am debating between the Eibach Springs and the Westcott lift (leaning more towards the Eibach…). Any thoughts on this?

 

I am in the same boat! I'm not in a hurry to have this done, but am leaning towards the Eibach Springs as the best option for a modest lift.

 

For more money, you can get spacers from Westcott.

For less money, you can get coil springs from Eibach.

 

Be aware that you can't add any extra weight with those options. Eibach is just a taller spring but oem spring rate and westcott is a glorified spacer.
