Hello all. I have a question about the kids 2006. It's an SR5 4.0 with 161,000 miles. It has a check engine light with code P0430. With these miles, is it most likely an 02 sensor or the cats? I can get the freeze frame data from my OBD scanner if that will help. Thanks.

Gonna go out on a limb and say its probably not the cats themselves, despite the age. New O2 sensors can be had from Amazon, eBay, or RockAuto for $40 or less. Try that and see if it clears?

Thanks. Yes I wouldn't think it would be the cats either.

While I would also agree, as TOYOTA cats are usually top notch, $40 O2 sensors are not a good idea. They will cause you a world of headache since they fail often and you will always suspect them.

+1. Don’t cheap on parts. Toyotas got you this far just go to the dealership or order authentic parts so it can last you another 160k miles. Granted if the oem parts are expensive I would buy the $40 part to verify if that is the issue and then go get the oem part.

Cheaper yet...have you cleared the code?

I got a cat sensor code and cleared it. It came back after a bit and I cleared it again and it's staying away for now. I've done this and had the code stay away for 6 months at a time.

Sparks has the sensor for around $100 or so. That isnt too bad at all. It actually drives fine thats why I didn't think it would be the cat itself.

Not sure why Im getting dinged on this. Denso or NGK is what Toyota OEM is... https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=1606676&cc=1432828&pt=5132

In case others chime in here though for reference there are two versions of sensors. The sensor upstream of the cat is definitely not $40 and is the A/F sensor. The downstream sensor is the O2 sensor, the $40 one.

Correct. My apologies then if that is a true Denso part. I've paid far far more just to be safe and assumed $40 was a knock off price.

    I ordered both downstream sensors.

Let us know how it goes. If it isnt that there are other things to check that could trip that code: A/F sensor, exhaust leak, faulty spark plug, etc...

Will do....thanks. My scanner said Bank 2 catalyst efficiency so we will see what happens.

I agree. Just mean that the P0430 code means "catalyst efficiency is awry", but its really just saying the ECU sees something is off between the measured values and expected values. But that can come from various sources right - either of the sensors themselves, exhaust leak, intake leak, faulty spark plug/injector/ignition coil, improper engine timing, and more. Unfortunately it may well be a number of things, but first for sure to check are those sensors.

Replaced both downstream sensors with Densos. So far no CEL. I tapped all 4 cats with a ball peen hammer and no rattling or anything.
