Located a Toyota Tech bulletin. EG018-06:

    ILSAC GF-4 ENGINE OI
    RECOMMENDATION

    States:

    ILSAC GF–4 SAE 5W–20

This oil has been set as the Toyota genuine engine oil, starting in February 2006 for

the U.S. This oil is superior in terms of fuel economy, engine protection, and cold

    starting performance.

    ILSAC GF–4 SAE 5W–20
Recommended for the following engine series.

    AZ series

    GR series

    JZ series

    MZ series

    NZ series

    RZ series

    UZ series

    VZ series

    1ZZ–FE

    2TR–FE

YET!! In this Tech Bull a statement framed in a Red Rectangle states:

    NOTE:

The recommended viscosity grade for this oil differs according to vehicle model.

Use the recommended grade specified on the oil filler cap or in the Repair Manual

or Owner’s Manual for each vehicle.

I look at the owners manual for a 07 and 08 and 5W - 30 is the recommended engine oil.

    Is anyone using 5W - 20 ??

Thinking about getting a new paint job.. Purple metallic or pearl, I'm not sure yet.
No, I use 5W-30. The viscosity for 5W-20 is too thin.

Neighbour started using 0W - 20 in his Jeep. Stated superior cold start performance. Possibly true but the engine burns oil now and sounds rattier than a diesel.

Toyota corporate office would not acknowledge the Service Bulletin. While at a dealership purchasing parts received the OFFICIAL statement that 5W-30 is the correct viscosity. Bearing technology is a well known science with specific molecular clearance for optimum performance. How 5W- 20 could replace original spec was a puzzle.
