I have a 2006 4Runner Sport Ed w/ 117k miles on it. Had misfire in cyl 4 and after checking on coil, spark plug and then noticing heat wasn’t working correctly, my roommate tested HG. Toyota confirmed blown HG. Better to get new HG, replace engine or get new truck? I’ve taken pretty good care of truck. There is some rust due to it being in northeast and all the salt. I don’t know much about mechanics. I just am so stressed about it.

depending on how bad the rust is...if not, and you have enjoyed your '06, I would go ahead and fix-replace motor. far cheaper than a new/used 4runner

fix it, patch the rust and enjoy another 10 years
or fix it, sell it, buy new one, the sale would be good $$$ in this market

Unless the head is warped, just replace the headgasket and keep on trucking until the frame rots out.

As they've all mentioned, replace the HG. I wouldn't trust the history of any used engine unless it was from someone you know personally. For all you know that replacement engine could repeat your exact same issue a few years down the road.

Option 3. Sounds like you can afford a new one, new one will leave you with no worries on long road trips, desert or high mountains. No stress.

Ngl that is a tough choice depending on the state of your vehicle. I hear people buying your year of vehicle with more miles for $8-10k in this market. Granted if your vehicle has a lot of rust that is deep and not just surface level. Your car might not be worth salvaging. However, assuming rust isn’t bad you need to ask yourself??? What caused the blown head gasket? Did the coolant run low, thermostat get stuck, known problem Year, etc.

I guess things go bad from sitting (assuming it sat for what sounds like to me long time). Would hate if you got this work done and suffer the expense again. Finding the root cause would be important to get the situation corrected. Not trying to scare you but there are things outside our knowledge about what you should do.
