Did you ever find the torque on the 4.0L insufficient for some off-roading?

Oh, yeah! I could enjoy the growl in a muscle car like that! But, in a vehicle designed for travelling... No thank you!! :D

I think you're looking at this backwards.

The 4runner has adequate torque, but is geared for fuel economy. Between the granny gears in the differentials, and the 5 speed transmission, it needs to downshift frequently to maintain speed.

If the 4runner were equipped with lower geared differentials, we wouldn't even have these threads. We would just have more threads bitching about fuel economy. ;)

I don't know, I suspect that lower geared differentials combined with more transmission gears would allow the motor to work less hard and probably get better fuel economy.

My Firebird is geared for economy with a four-speed auto with a 2.73 rear, and loafs along at 1600 RPM at 70mph just fine. Because torque.

We always go back and forth on this though. You like the 4.0, I don't. Nothing wrong with that, we can still be friends. Cheers!

The Jeep Rubicon (Wrangler and Gladiator). They have a 4:1 low range. IIRC the Bronco has a 3.06 :1 low range. The Bronco has the interesting feature of a 7:1 "crawler" gear in the 7-speed manual, that is only available on the 4cyl models. Combined with the low range, that *may* have a better crawl ratio than the Rubicon, but I'm not sure.

    Man, I'd love a 4:1 low range!

Ours is 2.57:1. So, a Jeep has way better gear reduction.

Wish Toyota had bought Jeep when they were on sale. Can you imagine a solid bulletroof Toyota Wrangler. But I guess Toyota was too big of a name to buy others.

A Toyota built Wrangler was the birth of the Landcruiser. :D Well, it was more like a Toyota built Willy's Jeep.

But, yes, a modern version if the FJ40 would certainly be a huge hit with the off-road community.

Wangler is the King, guys! Whether we like or not, but King is King. Wish it was bulletproof reliable. Though their owner claim they are reliable, but they are biased.

i never really liked my GFs wrangler. but that's just me. horrible daily driver. maybe as a pure dedicated trail vehicle. with an extra 4runner to tow it to the shop every other day.

my buddy had one in high school. it was cool that one day we took the top off and went to the beach. cruising around with cigars thinking we were cool AF.

That's why I want a 4Runner. Super comfy with KDSS. It can do everything and is solid. Wrangler is too hardcore, made only for trails.

short wheel base can be super sketchy in slippery weather too. surprise 360* spins aren't always fun.

I have to say I bought a 2007 Jeep Wrangler, and other than an oil leak at the back of one of the valve covers, I had no other non-regular maintenance items. Sold it to my son, who has used it as his daily driver for the last two years. The only item he has needed to replace was the ignition switch and it was an easy repair. Maybe we got a good one, but we certainly did not have a bunch of reliability issues over all those years. Having said that, I like my 4R more.
