    Hi guys,

I am getting ready to rebuild the rear axels on my 94 4wd v6. The diff oil is leaking out the drum brakes. everything must go except a few parts. the axel shaft is staying but not much else. New backing plate, wheel cylinder, spring kit, drum & shoes. What i need most are the oil seals (inner and outer) and bearings, the o-ring, essentially everything from the housing out (the part numbers are most important because ive already used Summit racings part finder and have gotten wrong parts. Basically a full list of everything (please include part numbers) that i may have missed getting ready for this project (i would prefer to only take the axels out once). any tips are also appreciated. Once im ready ill post progress pics because this seems to be a common problem. Thanks guys.

those are all common parts you can get at any local parts store.
why are you replacing the backing plate? unless it's damaged...

yes i have already ordered parts. A few of them were not correct parts. All i had were part names and not part numbers so exact was difficult to order. had to use some of the part finder tools through websites. much easier to order part numbers instead. And one of the backing plates is damaged so i decided to do both for consistency. Its a high mileage truck so i dont mind giving it the treatment to go 500k

Hi Travis, I need to replace the outer rear axle seals on a 2000 for the same reason. Any tips and what tool did you use to remove the old ones? Many thanks, Shadetree.....

So the oil seals should fall out if they are saturated with oil. I pulled mine out with my fingernail. If not, use a gasket puller, kinda like a bearing puller. If you don't have that then a plastic screwdriver would work. Metal is dangerous because if it knicks the housing that's a potential leak point. Reassembly is lubing the new seal and lightly seating it with a socket slightly smaller than the housing and gently taps.

Travis, thanks for your prompt reply. I assume you had to pull the axle shafts to change the outer seals? This is in my son's 4R with 215 K miles and he does not have enough money to have have a full rebuild by a pro. So I volunteered and want to replace only the the essential parts that make sense to keep the cost down. Obviously, I have never had to do it on any of the Toyotas I have ever maintained. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Kindest regards, Shadetree....
