Picking up our TRD pro on Monday. I’ve been at fort hood a couple years now and haven’t had a chance to make it out to the beach yet. Was going to head over in the new 4R to either Galveston or Corpus Christi area to do some beach camping with my wife and dog. It’s New Years weekend, any recommendations on a good area? Might try to book a fishing charter too if anything is available.

Do you know what they may mean by “the coastal bend”? Online it says the beaches are dog friendly even off leash on the coastal bend of port Aransas. Maybe we will camp on the beach one night there, then stay in a hotel in Galveston another night to check out both areas

The Coastal Bend is in reference to the majority of that part of the Texas Gulf Coast that “bends” from (generally speaking) Matagorda Bay to the Laguna Madre north of South Padre Island. It Is a general / broad reference to that coastline.

For camping, Port Aransas is a great place. You can camp on the beach and walk over to the jetties to fish or fish from the Horace Caldwell Pier. Restaurants and shops all close by. Several good hotels in the area if you get tired of the sand. Good seafood. Plenty of charter boats at fisherman’s wharf. Everything from private charters to pay per person / large group head boats.

Head South on I35 to Austin then get on 183 South to Refugio. From there take the back roads thru Bayside and over to Aransas Pass. Then on the ferry to Port Aransas.

Pick up some bbq at Smitty’s in Lockhart.

    safe travels.

Congrats on your new TRD pro. Enjoy the journey.

As far as beaches go, I think you’ll be disappointed if you leave Port A and go to Galveston. Not even in the same conversation. We were at Port A for a week in July and stayed at the Best Western on West Ave. G. There are several beach access roads off 361. We ran the beach almost all the way to Mustang Island State Park. Be mindful if you go on a weekend there will be a line to get on the ferry. We waited 45 minutes once. Most of the time it’s not that bad but don’t get there and need a restroom. And you gotta go to Irie’s Island Food on G. Funky little place that has an unusual menu and everything is made from scratch. The best we have found, including the bigger places like Virginia’s, which will always have a line and is very good.

if you didn’t already read this, anyone who parks on the beach has to have a beach access permit. It’s just a window decal that you can get at any drive in grocery. I don’t remember how much it was but it wasn’t expensive and if you go after January 1 it’s good for the whole year. The money goes toward maintaining the beaches so I don’t really mind the expense.

And finally, you gotta post pics. The pic of my 4Runner under my username was taken there. You’ll love it.

Awesome! Thanks for the info!!! Yeah I’ll get pics for sure. We were actually told the 4R was able to be picked up Christmas Eve, and we waited most of the day until we were told the drop off would be too late. So now we’re picking it up Monday night.

    My recommendation would be PINS.
Padre Island National Seashore- 60 miles of just beach.
No hotels and a lot less people.

A vote for Mustang Island. We have camped on the beach at a Mustang Island State Park. I like the facilities at Texas State Parks. Not all states have as nice of bathroom and showers.
