My friend gave me a BNIB K&N drop-in filter to put in my Pro-4x Xterra, I was hesitant, but used it anyways. The following day the vehicle threw a code for the MAS, coincidence?

In my experience, they come over oiled from the factory and people tend to use way too much oil on them. I didn't have issues with them either but just stopped using them when I kept finding dust past them.

Edit: That's a lot of thems.

I bought a used FJ cruiser for my daughter a few years back and some idiot had put one of these filters in.

It was oiled so heavily that I had to wipe down the airbox twice to get all of the crap out.

Never threw any error messages, but just like above I had noticed there was considerable dust beyond the filter and the air intake.

I've used K&N air filters on past vehicles and have had some issues. I've always been very careful to not over-oil them. There may have been a time way back when they were good for a little extra power only because they allowed for more airflow and less filtering, old engines didn't care. I would not mess with these on modern engines. Yes, the 1GR-FE falls under this category :D. Toyota OEM filters are relatively inexpensive, thoroughly tested, and very high quality. I would not use anything but OEM.

Why wouldn't you use a serviceable dry filter instead of an oiled version, if you insist on aftermarket?

Given the fact that you can see through the filter if you hold it up to the light. Should be enough proof that tiny particles of dirt can get through. Some people reported high silicone numbers on their uoas which dirt getting past the filter. Majority of people who do use them don’t do oil analysis. Plus your dealing with oil which if not done correctly can screw up the maf sensor. I’ve had dirty throttle bodies because of them. That’s why I don’t use them.

Right because you've done all the R&D to back this up. What a joke. I've had one in my 2010 tacoma since day 1 with 230K to date, and just oil changes. Engine runs like it day on day 1.

Like many things that aren't a great idea, most of the time they don't cause a problem, but that doesn't mean they're ideal. K&N filters are too reliant on being maintained correctly and not everybody does it or knows how to do it. The payoff just isn't worth it. Ford was even denying warranty claims on K&N equipped diesel motors because of over-oiled filters causing issues. I'm glad you've had no issues though.

Here is a little light reading I found for K&N vs dry filters. Enjoy.

"That is the million dollar question, isn’t it? It all comes down to the type of car you have. K&N filters do offer an increase in airflow and that means that the engine has the potential to increase its performance but only if it has the capability to do so. Most cars are designed to work with a certain set of parts and as such might not be able to take advantage of a K&N filter. All an increased airflow will do for such cars is make it more prone to collecting debris and dirt. People have actually reported a decrease in performance and an increase in fuel consumption once the stock filters are replaced with these aftermarket K&N filters. This is something that has also been confirmed by numerous tests and research papers. The effect of these filters on regular cars are not worth the added risk it poses to the engine. K&N filters only seem to produce any noticeable difference in the more performance-oriented cars and work best in the clean environment of a race track. They can seriously hamper the car if you tend to drive in heavy traffic where the air is laden with suspended particles. A K&N filter will also last much longer than a stock filter but that doesn’t mean much if your engine is taking a beating every time you drive out with your car. It is much cheaper and easier to replace an air filter rather than the entire engine block. Unless you own a sports car that you often take to a race track, a K&N filter is nothing more than a novelty item that will give you some bragging rights but that’s about it."

Years ago I was a K&N guy & did notice a slight perfomance gain. (GM trucks) I'm not saying that K&N are junk, but after watching "Project Farm's" video (YouTube) on air filters (including K&N) I will NEVER use a K&N air filter again.

Oiled filters probably have some performance advantages, as @Mass4runner lists above, for some cars in somewhat clean highway driving conditions. But so many of us drive 4Runners in dusty off-road conditions, so why take a chance on the possibility of sub-par filtration?

The OEM air filters as delivered are 17801-38051 which have a foam pre-filter tacked on for supposed better large grit capture. Some people specifically search for these online since most dealers don’t carry them.

You have to be careful when buying from Amazon, because most of the time the pre-filter is shipped separately. I think they want to sell it for extra.

Yeah, you have to buy from the real Toyota dealers online sites. And check their return policies in case they do send you the non-foam version by mistake instead.

Proof is in the oil. You can cause more wear an tear internally and you wouldn’t even know it. Most people change their filters too early. A filter minder measures vacuum and is a good tool to use when it’s time to replace the filter.

I didn’t buy my 4Runner to save the planet. I bought it to survive the next zombie apocalypse.

A few air filters in the dump is nothing compared to the CO2 from driving a fat pig that can’t get 20 mpgs.

AirRaid non oiled keeps engine clean from heavy dust I'm always in while upping my airflow. I've tried EVERY single brand from those mentioned here to Purolater.

Op, the KN filter will fit.
If you feel comfortable in your decision, go for it!

I’ve used the KN filters on other vehicles thinking they would perform better and be easily cleaned to save money.
Installed with from the packaging with manufacturers oil dose.
Well, MAF sensor became very dirty, relatively quickly. Strike 1

If you know anything about micron filter size, the OEM Toyota filter is better than using a gauze filter that has been oiled. I would rather not introduce any extra dirt into my throttle body and cylinders and into the crankcase.

    YMMV
