Torn with purchasing a well maintained 4x4 v6 with 180k+ or looking at a v8 with more maintenance. Only have experience with the 13+ 4.0 engines in the Tacoma motors but concerned with the 03-05 head gasket issue I've read about. Have had several tacomas but am lost and need some guidance if anyone can help me in the 4runner arena. What can I expect longevity wise? Thanks

The v6 is the same 4.0l you're used to in the Tacoma minus the SAIS headache. The headgasket issue is a gamble. Some will have issues, some won't. You don't mention what year either of them are or the mileage of the v8 you're looking at.

As far as I know the only "more maintenance" for the v8 is the timing belt. They also apparently have an issue with the OEM exhaust headers cracking, but again, known issue. Otherwise change the oil and you're good. V8's in my experience are also going to cost you $1,000+ more than a v6 in the same condition.

IMHO can't go wrong with either motor. If you're towing frequently maybe hold out for the v8, but that'd be about the only thing that would sway me one way or the other.

Thanks man. Think I've seen you over on Tacoma World. I read the 4.0 head gasket issue is 03-05, 06+ Toyota changed the design. As long as the V6 can flat tow a jeep I'm good, otherwise I don't tow much anymore

If you're thinking of towing, def get the V8. IMO the 4.0 is really unpleasant to drive, I wish my 5th gen had a V8.
