I want to mount a Tow Hitch Light Mounting Bracket to the factory installed tow hitch on my 2014 4Runner. I can not find a stock bracket that will fit my 4-Runner because there is a continuous ¼ inch thick “U” welded to the sides and bottom of my receiver tube which makes the outside of my receiver tube 2 ¾” x 3”. Question: what is the purpose of this welded strip and what would be the negatives of cutting it off? Thanks for any insight that can be provided.

thanks for the reply but I need to leave my trailer hitch receiver open. I am looking to mount my bar (then the lights on the bar) to the receiver tube forward of the receiver opening.

The extra steel is there for additional strength. I would not advise grinding it off as you will jeopardize the structural integrity of the receiver.

Can you mount the bracket to whatever mount you are using in the receiver?

This. I can't recommend enough not grinding away at support material. Have you considered something like this?
