Picked up a new Trail in mid September, already fitted with Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs. Averaging about 19 mpg and that includes some pretty mountainous country and highway speeds. - Ted

My son's 2016 TRD PRO gets 21 mpg on the highway. 15ish in the city. We did change the air filter to the TRD and noticed about 3mpg difference. If you decide to do this as well, disconnect the ground on the battery replace the filter then let the car sit for about 30 min. Drive it a bit hard for 20 to 30 miles and this sets the gas to air ratio. Got this info from the Toyota Tech. Seemed to have worked.

I've been getting 19-19.2 mpg since ~2K miles. It's got ~3200 miles now. This is from mixed driving, between 30-65 mph, during my daily commute.

I'm going to try 87 octane in a few days, and hopefully notice no difference in performance from the 89 octane I've used exclusively so far.

I used 93 octane for a couple of tank fulls same exact MPG though I did notice a slight more amount of torque very slight.

I see you're back to 87. I'll try that at the next fill-up

I did read here about the 93 not improving MPG and this was true for me . no change at all and I was driving very easy on the throttle and speed.

my experience is , these are not of a shape that aids in MPG so the faster you go the lower the MPG's.
I do now believe , these can get 20 MPG , if you do not exceed 60 MPH.

We saw a solid 2-3 MPG simply by changing our exhaust on our '16 TEP. Went from between 15-16 up to 18-18.5 instantly with the exhaust change. After 3" lift, 35" tires and now starting to armor and it's back down to the 15.5 range with all the extras on it. Happy to see it's not 13mpg like it could have been

I filled up with 87 octane last night with the tank almost totally empty, and have driven ~70 miles. Here's what I notice:

    Positive:

    - mixed driving mpg has stayed the same at 19.1 so far
    - there is no feeling of 'knocking'. Things are smooth

    Negative:
    - it seems like I need to press the pedal more for those scenarios when I need a little burst in acceleration. I'm self-diagnosed as having OCD and I do motorcycle track days so I'm good with intentionally doing things the same way every time.

Stock 2016 Trail 2k miles, A/C always on, avg speed on highways 80mph. Get around 18.7-20 depending on how much I have to drive in the city.

I did a trip last summer from Montreal to Yukon and Alaska with my 4runner 2007 V6 stock at approx 55 mph, I did all together 10,000 miles and average 25.20 miles to the Canadien gallon

After a few hundred miles on 87, I noticed that timing had adjusted to the gas and acceleration had come back to being as responsive as with 89 octane.

I'm now halfway thru my 2nd tank of 87 and efficiency has come down to 18.9 mpg...same daily route, same conditions, same gas station.

At this point, I'm thinking the engine uses up more 87 octane than 89 to provide the same performance. But with the price difference, I'm still saving about $12- /month with 87.

Last summer I did a long trip for my vacation and I was simply curious about my average millage. All in all I did 3000 KM on gravel road, a lot of mountain road in Alaska, Yukon and Northen BC and the Prairies. All very different roads. I can only say that the 4runner is a very confortable trusty robust truck that is cheap to run!

After just over 5k miles, 17.3mpg's seems to be what my 4Runner gets with mostly city driving.

First week in my '16 4Runner. I love it, but I'd be lying if the MPG didn't bother me. Supposed to be able to get 17/21, right? I haven't even broke 16 (15.6) since I bought it, mixed city/hwy. And I drive pretty easy on the gas, especially since I've been actively trying to get at least 17. Will my MPG improve after the break-in period?

I have about 400 miles on mine. I'm averaging 18.7 mpg mixed evenly with city/ highway driving. Guess it'll only get better with time. Keeping a steady speed has more to do with gas mileage than people think. I've taken trips before where I drove the same exact vehicle as someone else round trip and I was able to get a few mgs better because my I was able to keep a constant speed rather than pressing the gas and letting off then pressing and letting of to stay around the speed limit.

Also, keeping a steady speed will avoid making any passengers car sick.

Find your inner zen. Maintain a steady speed while driving and try to imagine an egg between your for and the gas pedal. Try not to break it. Avoid riding the brakes.

On my way to work there is a newer section of road that is as straight and as flat as any road you can find, it is approximately 10 miles in length and if I drive 48 miles per hour I will get 31.2 MPG reseting the AFE guage while rolling. I have done this in both directions at varying speeds and at least on my 5th gen 4Runner this seems to be the sweet spot where I get the highest mpg.

I can tell a difference with 93 octane vs 87. 2mpg real world difference. The mpg averaging mode on the info center and doing the math both equal around a 2 mpg increase using 93 octane.

20.7 for the premium. At 80 cents more a gallon, I'm not sure it is worth it.

That is not bad mileage at 70 miles an hour to get almost 19MPG. I'm assuming you had luggage and stuff that made for a heavy 4Runner. On my "test track" I'm getting 22.9 - 23.4 at 60 miles an hour on a virtually empty vehicle. I would love to get a hold of some real gas and see what kind of results I get, ethanol-free gasoline in my area is like spotting Bigfoot.

I can get into long drawn-out discussion about what negatively effects gas mileage but the most influential factors are driving habits, weight of the vehicle, tire pressure and what you don't hear discussed very often, ambient temperature
