Hello all - I am going to take my ORP there next weekend (assuming that it is still open). I have never been there or off-roading before for that matter. A friend of mine is going to take his Jeep and come with. I have some recovery gear, and watched a number of videos on the park and related topics. That said, any thoughts on what I should be thinking about and keeping in mind as I head up there. Also, what should I air down my tires to when I am there - if at all?

    Thanks for your thoughts!

Cool! I’ve heard about the place but havent been there myself. Does your friend in the jeep have any off road experience?

    Do you have stock tires?

Are you comfortable with what the 4-lo, lockers, a-trac, and terrain control do?

It’s good to take snatch straps to pull each other out when necessary. It’s probably good you also pick up something like this to help with rear recovery, or if you’re the one pulling. Farm and fleet usually has them.upload_2021-11-1_14-7-54.jpg

Regarding thoughts…remember you need to drive home in it :)

It’s easy for things to go sideways quickly, so dont fall for the trap of showing off for each other. Maybe go in with the idea of getting through, not with the idea of conquering obstacles. Unless you have armor, tires, lift, etc, take easy bypasses if you have the option. Stock skidplates are not going to protect you from much.

Yes, air down. Low 20s psi is plently safe. Dont forget to air back up when leaving.

If you find yourself off camber, go slow. If your stuck while off camber, dont go full send.. it’s probably safer to get pulled out or pulled back.

Before you go, watch videos of 4x4 trail fails or something like that, so you can see what kind of mistakes will cause you to flip over. Even though a lot of vehicles can tilt quite a bit, the margin for error really closes down the more tilted you are. Bounce over the wrong rock with too much speed while tilted, and you could find yourself on your roof much quicker than you would have expected.

Take some pics and share! Have fun!

I think @McSpazatron nailed it here! I'll just reiterate to take it slow and be conservative.

Also, it says on their website that you must be a member of RL4WD to run the trails there, but a member of Tacomaworld went there recently and didn't have issues.

I’ve heard from others as well that the membership is not necessary anymore. Worth double checking though.

I will find out if you need to be a member and report back. Yup - slow and steady will be the plan. I have been reading and watching as much as I can to decrease the grade of the learning curve. I have no interest in damaging my vehicle. Just want to find out if I like it.

I am use to driving vehicles that have speed - so this one is a bit different, but can potentially open doors that the other vehicles could not. If I do like it, then I think I will take 10 days or so this spring and head out west with it.

If you're interested in trying some mild off-roading, a few of us are heading to the Pipeline on Sunday, the 14th for a day trip.

The Pipeline has mostly easy obstacles, and the more complicated areas have bypasses. We usually have some stock or mostly stock vehicles along.

There's more information about the plan here:

I second this! Highly recommend you check out the forest. It no “out west”… but “out west” is no “up north” either :)

Im glad I tagged along with @Thatbassguy when he mentioned one of these trips to me. Lots of pretty trails to travel in the national forests just a few hours away!

You're welcome! I hope to see you on the 14th! If not, keep an eye on these threads and meet up with us at another gathering. :)

True! The forest has it's own special kind of charm. I never get bored up there!

I can't wait for next summer already!

I am glad you all had a great time! Tigerton was fun as well. Although there was one part that was a bit concerting. I went through a mud puddle (slowly) and the 4Runner started to have some difficulty getting through it (in 4H) at the time. Eventually, it pulled through but was a little concerned that I might get stuck there. My buddy could not make the trip due to vehicle issues and there was no-one around… hence a bit of concern. Having a winch would have alleviated the concern.

    Beautiful scenery there!111E7680-18F8-40D5-8430-5444B16F45A8.jpg371BE315-D629-46E3-933B-EB6835737050.jpg371BE315-D629-46E3-933B-EB6835737050.jpgD8AA44C8-4F43-48FD-9B01-FB58E444F165.jpg

Awesome! And it sure looks nice there!

I’ll say you are braver than I for going on your first trip alone. But that’s living while you can!

Looking forward to another cheesehead joining in the next excursion!
