I will be taking delivery of a 2020 4Runner ORP in a few weeks and plan on lifting it and installing larger tires as soon as I get it. I am curious as to if a larger tire/wheel will fit under the rear in the spare location. I currently have a Tacoma with a 3/2 lift, however, a full size tire/wheel (285/75/16) will not fit in the spare location so I have that size spare in the bed.

I recently put BFG K02s on mine, 285/70/r17, and the 5th one fit just fine in the spare area.

    The 2 common 33” tire sizes 285/70/17 (32.7ish) and 255/80/17 (33.3ish) both fit fine.

I can verify I just put my 285/70/17 in spare location. No problems. Honestly didn’t think it’d fit though.

I must be doing something wrong. I have 285/70/17s and it doesn't fit well. It hangs down at an angle due to the bracket on the frame. I thought about grinding it off and rewelding it higher up so the spare can sit flat.

Additional question, does the 285 sit very close to the exhaust pipe?

Maybe the under carriage slightly varies between per year on my 2020 I have absolutely no problem fitting it in and it’s nowhere near the exhaust or any bracket I could probably fit a larger size tire in they’re easily

I have a 2011 and I fit a 255/80/17 (bigger diameter than a “33 inch” 285) just fine. I wonder if your vehicle has been hit and the frame is tweaked?

It's probably the hitch mount taking up space.

I have a 2019 with the factory class III hitch. The last post questions if the hitch is an for a 33 inch spare. Do any of you that said 33” spare works, have the factory hitch?

I was able to fit a BFG KO2 285 spare on my Taco spare location. Not all 285’s measurements are the same. BFG KO2 285 fit in stock spare location under my 2020 4Runner. It may be the brand or tire type that’s the issue. BFG KO2 285 is not 33’ 32.8 for a 285/70/17 and 33.9 for a 285/75/17. People are saying that 285/70/17s fit just fine... and they do fit. That being said, IF YOU HAVE KDSS (as I do) its a tight fit due to the location of the rear swaybar. While my KO2 does fit, there is less than a half inch of clearance between it and the previously mentioned swaybar. That swaybar moves/articulates as needed and could potentially rub the spare. In fact I've spoken to guys who also have KDSS and upon inspection they have noticed that the swaybar has rubbed on occasion. Anything bigger than the 285 KO2 could be a problem down the road

Thanks for all your replies. I was a little confused but now it looks like all I need to do is go buy five tires.

I was looking for answers since I just bought a 2019 4Runner TRD Off Road. It came with two spares (the one of the bottom of the truck) and another one with the TRD rims (which they kept in the trunk).

My question is, will the TRD rim with the 265/70/17 fit in the spare tire spot? Or do I need to use the steelie in order for it to fit there properly?

    Thank you in advance!

My 255/80R17 didn't want to go in at first (wouldn't clear the swaybar) until I tilted the tire downward towards the rear (hitch side) while turning the crank to hoist it up. It went in just fine after that.

I was able to fit a 295/70/17. It hangs lower, closer to rear diff height. My question is, anybody see the chain not being able strong enough to hold it for some reason? All together it’s probably about 75ish-80ish pounds. For off road use, I would 100% pass on this solution. This is just for a road trip though, so nothing that requires clearance. Just worried about the chain being strong enough to hold the tire is my main concern.

To clear it up, Tacoma’s come with a 265/65r17 from the factory. 4Runner’s have 265/70R17’s from the factory. While it’s not significant, it’s obvious why the 4Runner has a little more room.

To answer the questions, I have a 285/70R17 and it’s not close to the KDSS. If you have KDSS and 285’s, you should have a lift and I’d recommend the KDSS spacers. Is it close to the exhaust? It was closer to the OEM exhaust, but not so close you’d have to worry about anything. I also switched to the Magnaflow Overland exhaust and it seems just slightly further away from the tire and I don’t have to smell the lovely 4.0 fumes if I open my back window. Lastly, I have the factory hitch and no problems at all there either. Been running my 285/70R17 spare in the factory spot for months now.

I've been running Nitto Ridge Grappler 255/80/17 on a 2005 limited with rear hitch and in my case it does NOT fit "fine" but I can get it in adequately with some difficulty. Ultimately, I do get it tucked away enough so that it only hangs about 2 inches below my rear hitch. Just checked and it angles up towards the rear. I may not have tried the suggestion of angling the rear side of the spare (facing the hitch) downward before cranking it up.

Since I have onboard air, sometimes I install the spare with lower pressure (around 18 lbs) and that helps.

If there was 1/4 inch more clearance it would probably tuck in fine.

This is the 2010+ section. Might be enough difference between the two generations that makes it easier to fit a larger tire in the 5th gen spare location
