Two weeks ago I got my vehicle back from the shop after having my lift put on. Also had larger tires and FN FX pro Wheels installed. This vehicle is my daily driver and gets a lot of miles so today I was doing my first oil change and decided out of curiosity to check the lug nuts. Bear in mind I have known these guys for more than 20 years and used to four wheel with them very regularly.. I specifically asked them to torque the wheels to 85 lb today when I check them they were all set to 100 . How would everyone proceed and should I be concerned that the lug nuts have been compromised structurally?

Just out of curiosity how did you check the torque?

15 ft lbs one time shouldn't be a problem. That's likely still under the stretch spec of the lugs.

Using a torque wrench I set it to 85 and when I quickly realized they were at a higher torque I started going up in increments of two pounds. Roughly at 100 lb or 101 lb the lug nuts started to move I then tried a second method of backing them off just a scoch and setting the torque wrench to 95 and in some cases it would click that I still hadn't been below 95 or sometimes it would move just hair and then click. Is there something I'm missing

Should I just back them off a little bit with the vehicle sitting on the ground and retort to 85 lb? Or whatever the appropriate # is

Yes, just back them off enough to release the stretch and re-torque. You'll be fine.

Nothing to freak out about. If it makes you feel better, back them off and retorque. You're fine.

Half the cars on the road never get torqued lugs. I've even gotten a car back with lugs torqued to 200ft-lbs+ and had to take it back to the shop for them to break them loose. They re-tightened them to probably 75. they blamed the new guy not knowing how to set the impact gun right. Drove that car for years and a few tire changes.

    15 ft-lbs extra is nothing.

On super sensitive front ends like the 4Runner, progressively tightening in the correct pattern has proved beneficial. I would still always use a torque wrench on the 4Runner wheels and not an impact.

I have seen two vehicles in the last two weeks on the side of the road with a missing wheel, one was missing two. Better he over-torqued them a small amount then not at all....

Soooooo here is a question. I'm still sporting the factory spare wheel. But with the FN Wheels I got different lug nuts from FN for those Wheels. If I were to run into an issue and need to use my spare would I have a problem using the different lug nuts?

Not being able to see them, can't say. Do you still have the original lug nuts that work with the spare? If so, toss a bag of six in your jack compartment. Answering from 30 thousand feet.

Unfortunately I don't I sent them with the wheels and tires when I sold them last week the FN Wheels use an extended thread lug nut that seems on the narrower side I might be going to buy lug nuts at Toyota just in case

I would back them off and redo them for sure. I have seen bent rotors from over torqueing. If you have the tools, no reason not to adjust and even make a phone call to the shop and let them know. Good luck!
