I wonder if that orange is the Pro special color for the Tundra? That would make 3 different colors for the Pro. I wonder which one the Sequoia will have or if it will have a totally different one.

My point also is that this massive grill “design language” has been in use on non-turbo’d trucks for a while now. I really dont think this design treatment is about keeping up with cooling demands, It’s been in use before this new turbo era. And in any case, most of these grilles are decorative. Same typical radiators behind them, no special baffling to direct airflow, the actual bumpers and usual structure is behind these grills. The Sienna also, it has a grill monstrosity that is mostly blanked out/no flow through.

On the positive side, I saw a new Ram this morning that looked half way good, with more traditional front end styling. Maybe the tide is turning…or my meds kicked in lol :p

I sincerely hope not. The 10 speed transmission is a weak point of those trucks, not the motors.

I'm sure some good clues in that Tundra about the upcoming 6th 4Runner.
    1. Diff lock
    2. Multi-terrain select
    3. Crawl control
    4. Digital cluster gauge for higher end models
    5. Bigger touch screen for higher end models
    6. TNGA-F platform
    7. iForce and iForce Max hybrid engines
    8. Blind spot detection
    9. Rear view monitor
    10. Multiple terrain monitor

I need a 4dr pickup with an 8' bed for hauling my ATV and can tow 9k lbs. I understand that the new Tundra eliminates that configuration, forcing me to go to an F250 or a Ram 2500. Shame.

Was hoping the introduction of the new Tundra would force current Tundra prices down so I could pick up a 2021 for mid-30's. But, the chip shortage has made the 2021 Tundra non-existent, and the elimination of the V8 will make the 2021s sought after. *sigh*.

    Tows 12,000 pounds.

Crew Max cab configuration, which now comes with a choice of either a 6.5-foot standard bed length or 5.5-foot short bed.

2 out of 3 isn't bad. Why not flatbed for the ATVs?

If you're talking about removing the factory bed and installing a flatbed, that's not a bad idea at all. My current UTV is a Honda Pioneer P500 and it barely fits in an 8' bed.

I wouldn’t fear the engine, I’d wait to see the transmissions reliability for the first 2 years. I’m sure even if there’s some teething issues (ah la 16’ Tacoma)Toyota will have it sorted.

All this power train talk and no mention of the 4 link suspension? That’s going to be a game changer in ride quality. Now shitty axle wrap inducing lift blocks will be a thing of the past. Lifts will be easier with a quick spring swap or my dreaded but more likable lift block cousin the spacer.

Some video reviews have mentioned this, saying how they had to go the extra mile to improve suspension due to the body-on-frame design which would cause a rougher ride.

It will prove to be more versatile for towing. It’s a superior design. And easier to maintain I’m sure. I’d love to see a 4 link in a Tacoma.

We all love our Toyota’s, trust them to get it right and don’t resist some change. It’ll be fine.

Lunar Rock is the official exclusive color for 2022 Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro. And apparently this is the first time an exclusive color has been carried over into next years model.

Sequoia TRD Pro 2022 is available in four paint colors – Lunar Rock, Wind Chill Pearl, Magnetic Gray Metallic and Midnight Black Metallic.

Why is it steering itself? If you can't back a trailer, don't drive with a trailer. If you can't back a car, don't drive a car. If you can't breath oxygen from a tank, don't scuba dive. If you can't pull a ripcord, don't skydive. FML

From Sweers himself at about 10:30 mark in regards to the grill design and cooling requirements.

Informative interview. He also did an almost hour long one with TFL where go goes into detail with their goals and design / engineering philosophy.

Now this is what a Marketing person should strive to do. I know from experience that putting an engineer in front of a microphone can be cringeworthy at times, but for the people who know what he's talking about it is priceless. And those people will be the ones who fuel the word of mouth about the straight forward intentional design philosophy behind all the surface aesthetics. This puts at ease those of us car/truck guys fears of the V6 vs V8 hybrid stuff. I have those fears. I'll say that if that powertrain ends up in the 4Runner look out. There could be some amazing potential.

Giant grilles are a design trend in automotive design right now. Truth is that modern cars could have smaller grilles than they used to. Radiators are smaller and more efficient today.

Perhaps. We do have better materials and coolants etc today. But the laws of thermodynamics still apply. You will only get x amount of heat dissipation out of a radiator with the a particular setup, ie materials, surface area, air flow and cooling fluid flow and composition. These engineers know what the cooling requirements are and get it done. Also they have to factor in that in a global economy that these drivetrains will operate in many different climates. Therefore they must have sufficient cooling capacity in very hot climates. And don't forget the intended use, like towing, when its slow speeds (less air flow) and high engine loads, more heat. Less flow, more heat means more surface area and bigger holes for more flow. The cooling ducts for an F1 engine making 1000+ HP are comparatively tiny, but they have 180+ mph of cool breeze flowing over their tiny ultra high tech radiators. They don't like to sit still for long before they overheat and blow. Designed to be at the limit all the time.

The aerodynamicists will want aero efficiency for milage, while the mechanical engineers will demand giant holes, air dams and flat radiators for cooling. The design team then says that all their packaging of the components must allow for something pretty, but in the end the design guys lose out a lot for function. Look at that grill.

I certainly hope not. We sold our '19 Mustang just for that reason. The tranny downshifts at 60 mph felt like i got rear ended, noises included. Jerking while downshifting, very hard shifts upshifting, hunting for gears. The F150 forums are full with threads on the matter.
So far, nobody can beat the ZF8 transmission. That is probably the best automatic transmission ever made.
And it was proven that above 8 gears, there are no gains in efficiency. nowadays 10 is just a bragging number.

I really don’t understand the point of a 10 speed automatic, either.

7 to 8 gears seems to be the sweet spot.

unless the 10 speed allows them to do some type of wacky fuel economy numbers that are only reproducible under tightly controlled conditions and they use it to game government emissions regulations, but are not reproducible in the real world.

I would love to have the ZF8 in the Tundra. Had it in my 2014 Jeep SRT and it performed flawlessly for the 7 years I had the rig, and have one in my 2021 Ram work truck. Smooth, precise, and extremely reliable.

The 10 speed I had in my 2020 Silverado work truck was decent, but did feel like it was confused searching for gears at times. May have also been a function of the weak 5.3L as well. My buddy has a new Denali with the 6.2 and it is fantastic to drive.

We had a grand Cherokee with the ZF8, it’s probably the best automatic transmission on the market right now.

And my wife has it in her current Cayenne, it is capable of handling a shit ton of horsepower.
