When we click the map button on the dash of our 2020 it says navigation app not installed. Even though we installed it on our phone, it won't give us the option to add the app in the entune suite. Anyone see this before?

Is the SD card mounted? On the 19 and prior it's under a cover on the bottom right corner of the head unit. Not sure about the 20 with the bigger display.

Old thread, but I just brought home our 2021 SR5 and we get the same message when hitting the Maps button. I was under the impression that there was a rudimentary navigation system built in that didn't require a constant cell phone connection (there was on the SR5 that we test drove). Also, I don't see any SD card slot on this vehicle.

    Am I missing something?

Edit: Did some more research, seems that built-in navigation only exists on certain models, the rest of us are stuck with plugging in a phone to access any sort of navigation. Kind stinks having a dedicated "Maps" button that doesn't do anything. Oh well.

Which models have the built in maps?

I shouldn't have used "models", I think it's included on those that have the premium audio system.

Ok, the ones that have dynamic navigation.

Looks like an available upgrade for sr, trail edition, sport and off road. Standard on the rest

I have a 2022 TRD Sport and the same error, and hope that updating the system software will add the map function. Has anyone tried updating the software with navigation from Toyota's site? https://www.toyota.com/firmware-updates/updates

Prior to buying our '21 4Runner we purchased a '22 Camry XLE hybrid. The dealer told us that Toyota was moving away from offering their own navigation and was leaning on the cell phones that everyone carries.

While it sucks up front to not have a map available at all times 97% of the time I know exactly where I'm going and how to re-route if there's a problem.

What I find most annoying (Camry experience) is the Bluetooth visual interface. It plays fine, but will only show basic information while driving, and while stopped will display album cover art. However, if I teather it I can have the full Spotify experience at my fingertips while hurling down the interstate...

*The 4Runner is primarily my wife's and (at the time of this writing) 5-days of ownership has given me almost zero seat time.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread. If a ‘21 SR5 has an SOS button, wouldn’t that indicate the presence of a GPS? And that adding nav functionality is just a matter of installing an app and an SD card?

Our '21 SR5 does indeed have GPS and SOS. There is no slot for an SD card though.

I agree, there is GPS capabilities in a vehicle with the SOS button, and with no obvious SD card slot, there must be another way to turn on this hidden feature.

I just checked out a couple of YouTube videos about updating the maps on a 2018 4Runner. The head unit looks different than my 2022, and has compartment for a MicroSD card. Here are some screen caps.

Having a look at my 2022 (with navigation), there is no opening for an SD card. Perhaps the nav software and maps are added via USB or over the air. My daughter just got a ‘21 SR5 without nav, but she’s very outdoorsy and spends a lot of time away from cell service and I’d feel better if she had on-board nav that doesn’t require a phone.

I looked all over when I bought the 4R and couldn't find an option for installing onboard navigation, so I've been sticking with Android Auto. Fortunately Google Maps has a feature where you can pre-download maps for pretty large areas, which is useful for areas where there might be iffy cell coverage. The only downfall is that you have to think to do it ahead of time.

So there is absolute no way to install Toyota Navigation Maps?

I have Apple Carplay with Apple Maps/iPhone12. Cant seem to get Waze to display on the Carplay though. Any Ideas?

Can you be more specific? What do you mean when you say you looked all over? Do you mean you looked for an SD slot and didn’t find one? Or that you contacted a few dealerships and asked if it could be done?

Did lots of internet searching. Sorry, that did sound misleading.

I didn't call dealerships or anything, just did a bunch of internet searching 1.5 years ago when I got the truck.

I think Carplay and Android Auto only allow specific apps to function through the vehicle (i.e. why you can't watch YouTube videos or browse the internet). I don't know why Apple wouldn't allow Waze, but Android Auto does (Google also owns Waze, so there's that).
