Hit 1k miles..how long for first oil change?

Eh, life happens and I ended up doing it today @ 1300 miles. Not a fan of the skid plate setup. I managed to do it all inside the garage without ramps or jackstands. Just how she sits. Enough room under there for me. The next time the factory skid plates come off will be the last time. I ordered up the RCI plates immediately. Easier access to the drain plug and an actual door to the filter housing. I can live with that. The factory setup has to go. I'm not doing that again.

No surprises in the filter element at all. Very clean. Happy to see that. Peace of mind. I'll run it to 5K and do it again, and every 5k after. OEM oil and filters. I feel that I can take it to the redline with confidence if necessary and enjoy the quality of the 4Runner. Thank you Toyota! Kanpai!

 

10k for me. I’ll hit that in two months

 

I actually think the factory skids are pretty good. They have a lot of reinforcements built in.

From my research on aftermarket skids, the access openings for the drain plug and filter were much smaller.

Sure you gotta pull the factory front skid to get to the filter, but it's only four bolts. And the drain plug access plate opening is very generous in size compared to my old Tacoma.

 

On folks with newer models, what is the mileage set on the computer and on the windshield? Are y’all being told to go to 10k on the first OCI?
On my ORP and Venture it was/is 5000 miles and I was not charged to have it done last week at 5k.

 

Mine said 5k as well. Manual says 10. I’m going to trust the engineers. I had zero issues with my Tacoma and put 90k on it in 4 years. This engine seems to be more tried. Not worried about following the manual’s suggestion

 

I did my first one at 1800 miles just to be safe. Best under 100 I ever spent

 

This is my 5th new vehicle, a 2021 4runner venture trim . . i do the same every time. first oil change at 500 , next at 1.5k then at the 5k mark and every 5k after. is it necessary ? idk , but the 2001 4runner that ive kept all these years, with 230k miles , runs and sounds like it did on the first day i bought it . I don't change the oil because it wears out , i change it because it gets dirty i use mobile one synthetic . maybe there's better , but not by much ,and its readily available

 

I just bought mine and I swear the salesman said first at 10k and every 5k after that. Which seemed crazy to me. Maybe I heard wrong.

Lol. I’ve had good salesmen, and I’ve had ones that couldn’t figure out how to open the gas tank…… spent 10 min looking for a button inside only to realize there isn’t one. By the time I decide to buy I usually know more than they do.

 

I took mine to the dealership for an oil change after 1500 miles. I didn’t see it for myself but the tech said he didn’t see any metal shavings and the oil was clean.

 

I had mine done at 2,100 miles. Normally, I would do it myself. But the cold weather prevents me from doing it. I took it to the dealer. Dealer said first oil change should be done at 5k. I insisted it to be done at 2k and told him I would pay for it.

 

I did first oil change at 900 miles. Second will be around 3k miles and then every 4k miles or 6 month. Using Toyota oil and Filter

Fair enough…I missed my 1000 mile window and changed it 1500 miles or so. Not sure if I should worry.

Rule of thumb for a vehicle. If you plan to hand it back in 5 yrs, do the minimum to support warranty. If you plan to keep it for longer (I tend to keep my vehicle 6 yrs or more, and I’ll keep the 4Runner for 10 yrs), then I change frequently. If you tow, do short trips, sit in traffic then you’re supposed to do more often anyway. I changed mine at 1,600 kms, then at 5,000 kms, then recently at 10,000 kms. In grand scheme of things, it’s cheap insurance for 10 yrs from now, or longer.

 

It’s not obvious how many miles until gets the engine “worn in”. If you change too early, your filter still may be catching wear particles. I changed mine at 1500 miles. I examined the filter pleats with a magnifying glass. There were very fine metallic particles in the pleats at the bottom of the grooves. With old eyes and at a distance (arms length) one might not notice them. I plan on every 5000 miles going forward. I kept a Tacoma (3.4 V6) 17 years. I hope the 4 R goes as long. I know there are some good mechanics out there. But this is very important and represents a significant financial investment. So I can’t see not doing it myself. Wrong filter, no filter, skid plate bolts, over tightening filter or drain bolt, no drain bolt gasket; can’t tolerate. I had a neighbor (1988) with a 7 series BMW. He made a lot of money in insurance sales. He would rub me about changing my oil. One day I saw a puddle of oil under his car in driveway. He went to a “Jiffy Lube” type place that day. We pulled his car up on my ramps and the drain bolt was noticeably cocked, threads stripped. The oil change place said he did it. BMW dealer fixed it. I believe they replaced the oil pan. In 1988 it was $700.

 

OCI threads are like vampires. They rise from the dead, and gather followers. There's no killing them off.

 

I keep my vehicles 10 years, I change regularly at 10k miles with whatever brand of synthetic oil that is on sale

 

That's what I did. 1st at 1k and every 5k thereafter. Perhaps overkill but I'm certain it will NOT kill the engine and that's my aim.
