    Looks pretty good.

    Those hybrid specs are impressive!

Maybe that'll help convince some of the hybrid naysayers.......or maybe it won't.

And the rear window rolls down

Can’t wait to see people start modding it. If I decide to get one I’ll definitely be waiting a couple years, hopefully any kinks get worked out and car prices can finally settle down.

I think the current one is better looking and with this move to a more complex engine and electronics, probably more reliable too. Having said that, it looks OK and if I'm in the market for a truck I'd take it over a domestic, given their recent track record of poor quality.

I'm not diggin the camouflage manta ray look. Had been holding off on trading in the 4R for the new tundra due to towing needs and better gas mileage than the last gen tundra, but I just can't rock that fugly. The drive train looks very promising, 12k pound towing capacity and better mileage than the old proven V8. But, damn that front end and interior lameness. We waited since 2007 for this??

I like most of what they've done. I'm a hard pass on the hybrid, though. Batteries go South too quick in the heat and replacements are expensive....maybe if I got an extended warranty through Toyota. I was very impressed they've put a locker in it though as well as the other off roading capabilities!

One thing that concerns me is they are putting a 12k towing capacity on a 1/2 ton truck.

    I like the orange.

Looks like a pretty cool truck. It will be interesting to see how it does in the field.

Wouldn't that be interesting? A completely new redesign in a plant that is running at full capacity & it grinds to a halt because they can't get the semiconductors.

I guess I dont understand how on earth this ever-expanding front end grill design treatment has continued for so long. It’s been over 10 -12 years at least with this arms race. It seems manufacturers are building bigger and taller and wider front ends for the express purpose of just hanging bigger, wider, stupider plastic grills on them. I dont get it.

What ever happened to bumpers? Why should anybody have to worry about shattering their truck’s front end in a damn mall parking lot? Owners have to set up scaffolding just to be able to see in the engine bay to check the oil, just because more front end grill plastic is what the market demands? Really???

It’s trucks primarily, but minivans, cars too. Everybody knows you dont need that much air for cooling.

Generations of children have grown up not knowing cars/trucks dont have to look like this. Think of the children…our future. This just needs to stop.

    I blame Audi.

Wasn't it Dodge that started the large front grill look ?

Yes, and interestingly enough I believe the market research at the time equated that generation of Dodge Ram (the Walker, Texas Ranger era Ram) as masculine, and Americans need masculine trucks to look tough ('Merica!).

I'm heavily paraphrasing but I'm actually being serious. The designs we see are mostly market research saying we need a manly-man looking truck.

I think Toyota is going to lose a lot of buyers over not having a v8 option. Ford even realized this and this is why they still offer one.

With the cooling requirements of these new twin turbo powered trucks, the radiator / intercooler / air intakes / transmission cooler (brought back!) / etc, all require a lot of surface area.

lol, poor Toyota, they catch massive flack for multiple non-functional hood scoops, and then now catch flack for eliminating hood scoops in favor of enlarging the grill and engineering the cooling / intake systems into the grill.

    Perhaps, but it's somewhat pointless.

We know Toyota can do the following:
    1. Make a quality Hybrid (Prius has 20 years of experience)
    2. Make a quality engine with turbos (look at Lexus lines for this)

Most people want Fuel Economy and Power, and the vocal minority specifically want a V8.

Remove all engine data from your mind. Do you want 400+ hp and 580 lb/ft of torque with a reliable motor that is built well? Then the positional bargaining approach of hanging on to the "must be a v8" is impractical, and in the end the loudest complainers on the forums will still buy it, along with the 98% of people who never cared because they read the first sentence and didn't care if it had a v6 or a v8 as long as it did those things.

It's positional bargaining (must be v8) vs principled bargaining (merit based).

Also let's not confuse a high strung Ford motor vs. a Toyota one, even if the EcoBoost has proven to be more reliable than most would want to believe.

Ford also sells very few V8’s compared to their EcoBoost.

With how few Tundras they sell, I don’t think they will lose many cross shopping customers. If anything, I think they will gain market share since they addressed the main shortcomings.

New Tundra has massive increases in power, payload, towing, transmission, technology, off road capability, luxury / ammenities, and presumably economy.

If they can prove to do all this while maintaining their reputation for reliability, then they have hit a home run.

Most performance twin turbo applications dont require barn door sized surface area for cooling. Neither would an efficiency seeking setup with coffee cup sized tubos. I exaggerate for effect, but still.

Dont get me wrong, the power is defiantly well welcomed, however I personally dont trust a v6 and two turbos towing 12k, ive seen too many fords with blown turbos when used like a truck.

Also the grille, black fender trim with whatever that stupid design is on it, and that camo interior are deal breakers.

I welcome Toyota to prove me wrong, I just havent seen a v6 twin turbo live up to my expectations, too many blown turbos when towing from Ford. If toyota can pull it off and I see real world ownwers keep them and use them like a truck, I would be impressed someone finally did it

Come on man, apples and oranges much?

How you going to compare the cooling requirements of a 315hp / 320tq and 3500lb sports car to a truck?

Peak cooling needs for a sports car are a high speeds where air is easy. Trucks peak cooling needs are towing / off-road, but at considerably slower speeds with increased load.

I think he was getting at is that Toyota knows a thing or two about making an efficient turbo engine.

Once again, Ford vs. Toyota. Similar, but very different philosophy. Ford builds vehicles with crazy power and high performance, Lighting, Raptor, Cobra...their reputation is built on speed.

Toyota built their reputation on reliability. They can't afford a mass failure of anything, because that's their core value.

Very interesting that both Ford and new Tundra has pretty similar (on numbers) powertrain.

    Tundra twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 hybrid with 10 speed auto
    vs
F-150 twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 hybrid with 10 speed auto (which they made jointly with GM)

May be Toyota might be getting help from Ford & GM? So Toyota can compete with the truck market? (May be?)
