I may have posted this in another thread.
Think about a disaster, natural or otherwise.

Let's take New Orleans as an example. After the vehicles are electrified, what happens during an evacuation? After the storm hits?

Right now evacuees can go 300 - 500 miles on a tank of gas. I expect most electric cars for a city dweller to be 100 - 150 range and then a lengthy recharge.

What are the highways going to look like ?

How are the less wealthy people going to afford an electric car and a charging station.

Do we really think there will be charging stations installed for every apartment ?

Plug in and regular hybrids make more sense. You can even even get hybrids new for the low 20k's (pre-Covid).

True and a good point. However, keep in mind the manufacturers are already going full monty on developing EV cars. They believe it is the future. They are developing all new tech around EV, setting up their suppliers and retooling their assembly lines. GM even changed their iconic logo to be inline with an all-EV future. Regardless of future administrative decisions, the auto manufacturers have already jumped head first into the EV waters. They aren't going back.

    @Moon Landing CenCal

Agreed. The malls are starting to install a lot of charging stations already. They are tearing up parking lots and putting in rows of them. So many new ones I've seen over the last few years. So during the day you can shop or hit up a restaurant. But what are people going to do at night? Sit in your car in an empty parking lot for 2 hours?

They are installing them all over the place. Banks. Gas stations. Grocery stores. Truck stops. Car ride parking lots. National parks. Restaurants. Malls. Hotels.

Plenty of articles covering why hydrogen is not feasible. Expensive to transport and store (infrastructure), highly flammable, etc.

Give it time. I think we'll see a dramatic increase in distance for EV.

LOL, lots of misinformation here. Most electric cars can be charged up in a matter of hours with some coming in at under an hour. As far your statement of what happened in Texas, that was entirely the fault of those who run the grid. The windmills were never winterized like they should have been and don't forget that the entire grid shutdown. Green only made up a very small percentage of that not to mention that the idiots who decide NOT to tie in to any other state since they wanted to boast how great their independent grid was.

Wind farms and turbines do not freeze up, if they are winterized properly, as they are run in the northern states all winter. The future is green, we cannot sustain oil, coal, gas, and nuclear as our major fuel. Eventually they will be depleted and then what? May not happen in our lifetime but it will, might as well start preparing it now rather than later. Everyone knows this but many are afraid to admit it. Green is coming so get used to it.

For how long, and why not?

I would bet, but won't live enough to either pay or collect, that long after the US goes 80%+ electric, third world countries will be using more fossil fuels than they do today.

Gas prices in Central California. Although this is an extreme example because of the isolated location of this one horse town, the rest of CA is hurting at the pump. 87 octane is anywhere between $4.00 and $4.50. Cost me $90 to fill up last week. Starting to hurt the wallet and no end in sight.

That's insane. I think $7.00 will be my limit. Anything over that and sadly I will be trading in my 4Runner for a Corolla or something :(

I can live with $3.80, but here in California its $4.50 and rising. Starts to hurt with the long road trips.

During the pandemic I remember this in Virginia. I was visiting family. Even there it is $2.30 now.

How many miles can that car go after an “under an hour” charge? With the biggest charger available our Rav4 Prime would still take about 3 hours I believe and that’s for about 50 mile range. With the standard outlet, it takes over 12 to charge to a full 50 miles.

"In the case of the i4, charging the 550-kilogram (1,212-pound) battery pack to an 80% level will only take about 35 minutes, which results in 62 miles (100 kilometers) of range for every six minutes of charging."

Thats alot of energy being transferred, going to need some big cables to handle all that heat and juice. Real world results will be neat to hear about.

I’d be interested in an EV as a second car for local and short trips. And longer trips as I gained confidence in the technology and availability of charging stations.

I don’t know of anyone who has an EV who hates it.

we love our Rav4 Prime, filled it up 3 times in 5k miles, on EV (which is like a go cart) it costs about 2 bucks to go about 40 miles, and gas is currently over 3 bucks a gallon here. The wife loves not making a trip to the gas station every week or so.

It's really not the government at this point. Manufacturers like Ford and GM see the valuations that the stock market has assigned to Tesla and they want a piece of that action. They're chasing the money now, regardless of what the government says or does. It's primarily market forces driving the conversion.

That’s probably why there are tax credits for development and purchase of Ev‘s, tax credits for home chargers, and government incentives for cities and private businesses to build chargers? And the CA government is passing laws that will outlaw the sale of internal combustion engines?

some states have banned the sale of new gas powered engines in the future (don't remember the year), I heard some places in Cali are even banning the building of new gas stations, and banning gas powered lawn equipment.

Oh and there are tax incentives for the consumer if they buy an EV.

So I have to disagree and say the government has a big role in this.

Only the city of Petaluma, CA banned new gas stations. Population: 60,000

CA Gov signed law which orders state regulators to ban the sale of new gas-powered equipment using small off-road engines, a broad category that includes generators, lawn equipment and pressure washers.

    Well, here's a random article from Forbes, a neutral-to-conservative business publication: https://www.forbes.com/sites/enriqu...adoption-of-electricvehicles/?sh=3c6c2c6439d6

It lists 5 factors driving electrification of vehicles. One of them is directly related to government (albeit European government) so I will give you that. But my point is that there's a lot more going on than just government "forcing" something on consumers...

The Government push for EV's influences gasoline prices, the more the gas is going up, the more people are looking to purchase EV's; and the hoarding gasoline Hedge funds are getting wealthier by the minute.

Just follow the usual trail. Manufacturers are seizing the opportunity.

    Steps to significantly increasing revenue
    1. donate large sums of money to political campaigns that will push an electric-everything agenda.
    2. hire scientists to write slanted articles claiming anything non-electric will lead to world destruction.
    3. push said articles to major news outlets and magazines that you pay good money to advertise in.
    4. repeat as necessary.
