I traded a Rav4 hybrid, great car, that got more than double the mpg in the city and close to double on the highway.
I figured with working from home now why not get the 4Runner? As nice as the RAV4 was, the 4Runner is twice as nice to me. I pay double in gas, but at this point it's two times not much.
If I need to travel a lot more for work someday, I'll pick up base model hybrid.

4Runner is a beauty, the best in its class. It is not my commuter. It is just my dream truck that I will be driving no more than 300 miles a month.

That's funny - I did just the opposite I just sold my 2021 Outback Limited to Carvana (received over what I paid for it) and purchased a 2021 TRD ORP. I did like the Outback, great screen in the infotainment system, and it was peppy enough, I did think the bottom of the seat could use more cushioning though. In the end I just missed my 2019 TRD OR.

You know I deliberately went for a 2021, although I could get the 2022 for $1,000 more, I just hated the new grill on the 2022. It is not about you and your decision, but I find this new grill awful

Well, my 2022 looks a lot better than my 2016's grill and is not the same as you depict as 2022 (according to dealer's paperwork). Note the difference in grills. Photo of red XP taken on Sept. 4, 2021. I changed grill styles with the 2022 on Sept. 8th. I was lucky to be able to live much less buy the 2022 after what happened on the 4th.

I got misguided. I had my deposit on 2022, and pulled out at the last moment over that ugly grill that they were showing there :(

On my way home from visiting Michigan's UP. Been tracking my gas mileage on this trip. Hand calculated at the pump.
    15.6 mpg - 74 to 79mph
    15.35 mpg
    15 mpg
    17.02 mpg
    18.13 mpg - 50-59mph
    16.51 mpg
    17.96 mpg
    14.65 mpg - 74 to 79mph

I had a 97 Jeep Cherokee with inline six 4.0L, I know I was getting worse gas mileage like 12mpg on good day. Lets see what the new Tundra brings to the chip less market !:hattip: MPG measured in smiles :):):):):):):) and OT to filler up !

Yes Sir. Heavy 285 MTs. I aired up to 40 psi for most of the trip. Then playing in the sand dropped my tires to about 35 psi.
My best MPG of 18.13 was at 35 psi going slow - 50mph to 59mph.

On the way home (40psi) we got a hotel in Cedar Rapids, IA. I stopped at Casey's gas station where I accidentally selected 87 octane no ethanol. I've never seen that. No ethanol in my area is normally 91 octane. Pushing hard on the Highway yesterday (call it 79mph), I got 16.07mpg on that tank. Final tank was 16.44mpg.

    Final numbers:
    15.6 mpg - 74 to 79mph
    15.35 mpg
    15 mpg
    17.02 mpg
    18.13 mpg - 50-59mph
    16.51 mpg
    17.96 mpg
    14.65 mpg - 74 to 79mph
    16.07 mpg 87 octane no ethanol - 74 to 79mph
    16.44 mpg standard 87 octane w/ ethanol - 69 to 74mph

    Average of 10 tanks = 16.273 mpg.

I fill up at 1/4 of a tank on long distance highway road trips. In the UP, gas stations are few and far between, so I topped off frequently at 1/2 a tank.

Edited to add, before switching to the 285 Geolandar MTs, my stock size 265/70R17 SL rated Falken Wildpeak AT3W's averaged 18.75 mpg with all my armor & winch, etc.

40 is pretty close to the recommended PSI for LT285's on these anyway. I'm surprised you don't go lower in the sand. With 285's, I ran between 18-25 off-road. On the 295's I'm anywhere from 15-25. Or, did you just mean on sandy roads?

It's crazy how much better fuel economy is at 60 than it is at 80! I got 19.9 (corrected for tire size)on the 295's this spring going 55-60.

We were doing a short trip on the sandy roads. Could've literally spent days on those trails. I'm pretty sure you could explore all the UP without touching pavement, if you wanted to.

I normally run 20psi off road but didn't want to spend much time airing down or up. Plus my SO has such bad arthritis, that off roading = pain. I knocked some PSI out of the tires to help improve the ride a little more.

55-60 mph is tedious. We had a 2 car convoy for the UP and my brother in-law being fully retired, is in no hurry to go anywhere. I also noticed a significant lack of speed limit signs in the UP. I was traveling up and down a long stretch of road with no idea what the speed was. I figured 59-60mph ought to keep me out of trouble. Turns out that road was 65.

When speeding on the highway w/ cruise control on, I try to keep it within 4mph to 9mph over the limit. Find most cops wont bat an eye at those speeds. I've found the old saying "Nine your fine, Ten (over the limit) you're mine" to be true. Haven't had a speeding ticket in 20+ years. Knock on wood but, I've never had a reportable accident.

Sounds like a good time, overall.

I'll do the same and run a bit lower when I know I won't be in pavement much for a few hours or days.

Agreed about speeding. I'll usually stick to around 8 over. When I drive down to Florida I push it a bit more (except in Georgia!).

None. Bone Stock. EXCEPT: Brushguard, tow hitch, both welded to the frame. It's good to have friends and a fully equipped garage!
I may well be wrong on this, but I think Toyota, especially with the older ones, optimized the ECU for 55 (ish), since that was the national speed limit in the States for a long time. They were just targeting their main out-of-country, ie: out of Japan, market (the U.S.).

The ECU just starts becoming less and less efficient as you go faster and faster, over their target speed, not to mention the harder the acceleration. Sure, you don't want to go 0-60 in 20 minutes, but keeping the gas pedal off the floor does help.

All just my opinion, though. I have no proofs I can quote.

We have a 20 and 21 and if you keep it at 70 or less we can get 18 to 20. It's a truck and we are happy with the mpg. I even put in a sprint booster and no more pedal lag.. awesome. Wouldn't buy anything else

It could have something to do with gearing being optimized for that speed. But, most freeway speed limits are 65-70MPH now. I'm sure manufacturers would want to get the best possible economy at those speeds as well.

I believe it has most to do with wind resistance. I thought I had read that wind resistance increases exponentially with speed. So, at 80, you might have double the wind resistance that you do at 60. I don't know any actual numbers, I'm just making up an example.
