What is the future of gas?

Well, I am stuck with my 4Runner for a couple of decades. But the gas prices and the 4.0 litre mpg is freaking me out. What do you think, what price are you seeing on gas in 2040?

That's scary lol.

 

I would never be able to daily drive my 4Runner with the commute I have. I get approximately 48 mpg with a VW TDI and if conservative can stretch the tank to almost 700 miles.

 

Probably less than a dollar a gallon

 

It's hard to know, between inflation, administration, regulation, war, disease, alien invasion, the prices fluctuate so much. We're still better off than we were 10 years ago with prices which I can't name another commodity that's gone down after a decade.

A small silver lining for gas vehicles is electrification. EV's are the hotness so hopefully gas demand goes down as EV's get more popular. Plus, as EV's get more popular, regulators will follow the money and want to squeeze electric for their sheckles, rather than us gassers.

 

by 2040, the EV market share will totally different; it most probably will not be financially feasible to drive a gas car.
even the gas will be super cheap, they will probably implement huge taxes to discourage you to drive a gas only car.
it is just a matter of time till they have a cheap EV out there
as for your 4runner, the market is already planning EV trucks, Rivian, Tesla, Ford, GM...which are kinda in line with a nicely loaded 4Runner
i plan on keeping my 4Runner for a few more years and then get rid of it at a decent price for a hybrid tundra or the unicorn EV 4Runner

 

The biggest trouble I see with the EV only vehicles is the charge time. You can stop, fill up a gas only vehicle, and be gone in 10 minutes. The EV vehicles, at this time, take hours to fill up.
If you're on a long road trip, what's better? Stop for 10 min after, just for example, 400 miles, fill 'er up, and you're back on the road again. You want to do that in an EV you get to spend the night while your car "fills up". Kinda slows your trip down a bit. and what happens if you're in town, not watching your charge level, and your EV runs out? You're stuck until it tanks, whereas in a gas only, or combo vehicle, you tank up, and you can go home easily.

I can see the combo vehicles being fine, but EV only, unless you only drive around near home, and hawk your charge level, might easily strand you someplace.

Just hang on. The 'New Car' world has never seen anything like what they're currently going through and it's going to get much worse(from everything I read and hear). Before the end of this year you'll be able turn a healthy profit - if you want to unload what - you say - you're stuck with. Of course, that may have merely been a poor choice of words?

 

But I am so in love with this rig, it is my dream truck, I think I'm going to keep driving it as long as I can afford the gas bill Why are Toyota trucks so horrible on gas? Is it a reliability/longevity tax?

 

Are they really all that bad?

 

Domestic trucks have better MPG than Toyota trucks.

 

I don't think it will be over the top...maybe $5 - $7...simply because of diesel and aviation fuel. We rely on them too much for transportation in the US.

I'm on the fringes of the bell curve regarding electric vehicles, in particular the batteries. I'll start off by admitting I don't like them.

I think by 2040 they'll be dramatically more efficient, or simply not used anymore. The carbon footprint of manufacturing and disposing of these huge lithium ion batteries isn't as warm and fuzzy as some believe. Here in AZ, those batteries don't last as long as they do in cooler climates and they are several thousand dollars to replace.

I hope that hydrogen fuel cell technology will take off and that will be the best LEV option. But, like I always say, my opinion and $2 will get you a cup of coffee at Circle K.

 

What to do with batteries?


Here's what they're having to do with windmill blades which can't be salvaged.............(that's a giant Cat in the dust cloud.

 

The real question is why didn't you read the EPA MPG estimates on the window sticker before you spent $46,000?

 

I thought my conservative driving would help, and I was kind of right, I am getting 22 miles per gallon on the highway right now, I can live with that.

 

Stop looking at the screen/mpg just drive it and enjoy it lol

Wow that's insane!
Clean energy and EVs are the wave of the future, but many people do not realize that things like this are happening in the name of "clean energy".

 

Toyota's hydrogen fueled Mirai makes more sense than hybrids and EVs. I don't know why Toyota didn't go aggressive with it.

 

I think gasoline will be available in all our lifetimes. Even if all cars go 100 percent ev there will be a demand from hobbyist to fuel gasoline powered cars, motorcycles, boats etc. As long as there is demand, someone will keep refining to make money

 

I actually disagree. It ALL depends on who's in office. It always fluctuates. Gas will always be around and they're not going to get rid of it ANY time soon. Even though an executive order was put through, the next administration can easily appeal it.

 

You should see what happens when there are oil spills, nuclear accidents, and coal mine explosions and collapses.

 

In the US, more than half of the vehicles on the road will be electric by 2040. This includes trucks and big rigs.

In theory this should create much lower demand for gasoline, which should drive the cost down significantly.

Where I live, we're already seeing a lot of gas stations under construction to redesign their parking lots to accommodate EV charging stations. And big truck stops along major highways are also adding a bunch of EV charging stations.

Ford, GM, and Stellantis announce joint 40-50% EV sale goal in 2030.

32% of all US cars sold in 2030 are expected to be fully electric, according to a June 2021 forecast by IHS Markit.

And the speed of adoption is going to continue to increase, so by 2040, you can expect a ton of EVs on the road.

 

Again this is subject to change with different administrations.... Executive orders can be easily repealed in the bat of an eye. There will ALWAYS be a demand for gasoline & diesel vehicles / vessels.

 

Where you live?

 

Those truck stops and filling stations that are installing EV charging stations had better add a hotel or two as well. It takes so long to charge that you may as well get a room for the night.

Just more money in the truck stop/filling station's pockets, not to mention more taxes to pay the government.

Speaking of whom, the gov't doesn't seem to take into account just where the electricity is going to come from. Are they going to put a nuclear reactor at each stop? It's obvious that their "green" energy won't cut the mustard. Just look what happened to Texas last winter. Given the draw, and the supply, that was a dismal failure of their energy program. People actually DIED due to their "green" energy lack of supply.
If EV cars suddenly start putting a draw on the grid in a cyclic pattern, like the after work commute, or vacation/holiday applications, the current grid won't handle it very well, and if all that's available is the BS "green" energy, well, people are going to be upset, to say the least. And if they supply the vehicles above all else, what's going to happen to people who are elderly, or have small children? Yeah, quite likely there will be more unnecessary deaths. Especially in winter when a bad cold front moves into the area.
AND, the EV owners will still need a hotel room. Hotels draw a lot of electricity as well. They'll want restaurants, and so forth. More energy drawn, especially in the heat of summer, or the cold in winter. Rolling black/brown outs, and once again, likely more deaths.

Does the gov't CARE about all this? Not at all. They just "virtue signal" by requiring EV's, and a "green" energy supply, without considering where that supply will come from. Pretty obvious the wind farms freeze up, no energy from them, and solar panels get covered in snow. No supply there. What if, due to virtue signaling, that's all there is? Total grid failure.
Same for the green supply on private residences. Wind turbine freezes up, and solar panels get covered in snow. Will elderly folks be able to climb up on their roof to clean their solar panels? No. Not at all.

Not trying to get political, just wondering what's going to happen if "green" energy is all there is. Lots of deaths, and EV cars stuck on the side of the road when they run out, and there's no energy to charge them up. Again, frozen corpses for when the first responders, probably in diesel vehicles, manage to show up.
