4.0 litre is thirsty

First week of ownership and my 2021 TRD ORP is already hurting me at the pump lol.
How do you guys deal with this thirsty 4.0 Litre?

 

I don’t look at the gas bill or care for MPG’s, just fill it up and drive. That said, keep it stock because it’ll only get worse with mods.

 

If it’s any help, from what I understand, that 4.0 is super restricted. Apparently by throwing an intake and an exhaust to let it breath you can gain about half an mpg. It might seem counter intuitive but look into it. People have posted about it before.

 

It's no worse on gas than the Tacoma that I had before it, or the Tacoma that I had before that Tacoma.

No Toyota truck is good on gas.

You'll get used to it...or maybe you won't and you'll get rid of it...

 

If you bought yours brand new, the mpg is going to be worse the first few thousand miles while breaking it in. If memory serves me right, when I had my TRD OR, it got 13-14 mpg at first, but ultimately got 16-17 mpg after a while.

 

This is the best advice I have heard about driving to get better MPG, "Don't use the brakes, the brakes are your enemy."
Of course you will have to use the brakes, but if you think of it the brakes essentially throw away the energy and fuel you used to get to speed.
Drive very forward thinking and measure your speed to avoid using the brakes to slow down.

Then there's the usual stuff, reduce weight, air drag (roof rack, flags, etc), proper tire pressure.

On most vehicles you'll get better mpg with the windows up and AC on than vice-versa while moving due to increased drag.

 

If you're in a hurry, it's going to guzzle gas.

I try to keep it below 2500 RPM's while accelerating, aside from freeway ramps and passing. Also, if you're not in a hurry, highway mileage is much better at lower speeds (55-65MPH).

As mentioned above, it will improve some after a few thousand miles.

 

Im at only 1200 miles so break-in still underway. (1st oil change at 1000 and used Penzoil Ultimate. Was a lifelong Mobile 1 user but after researching was compelled by what i read which includes fuel economy - snake oil BS words? Probably)

Im Getting an average of 22mpg combined driving 50 miles each way to /fro work (100/day)
30 mins in town at 35mph roughly and 30 mins at 60mph roughly each way.

From the get go with this truck I started focusing in driving smart for fuel econ. As said above- brakes are a killer and throwing away energy.
These vehicles are heavy and they coast VERY well. VERY. Look down the road further than you might be accustomed to, let off and coast up to stops. Ideally not having to stop. Accelerate smart. Being super slow coming up to speed is NOT something im finding helps as it just prolongs distance burning fuel winding up. Jack rabbit fast start not good either. Still experiment with this and finding moving shifter over and manually shifting up thru gears at my shift points vs auto is an advantage. When get up to speed I kick over to auto for OD.

I’ve left the fuel meter screen up as an aid as im training myself on how fuel consumption behavior is based in certain conditions driving it.

my morning drives are now at 25mpg. Granted im on road at 5am so traffic pretty light but im getting near that on way home now too. Just 10 minutes earlier in the morning made a massive difference in my traffic load.

Starting and stopping does kill.
Slow down you're in a big vehicle - im not saying be a hazard or jack wagon asshat on the road BUT also dont let peer pressure move you either. Generally, most drive too damn fast, push people by tailgating and such. Most of the time they are just racing to the next light to stop. Ill roll up and not have to stop completely or pass em by only to do it again. So it is a fine line not to be pissin people off yet also not playing into the nonsense pressure.

taking it on a 3hour road trip this weekend with mix of interstate, highway and city as we head down to see my daughter at college a d Tailgate for the football game. Curious to see how it does on fuel. also looking forward to tailgating out of this bad boy!

I seem to do the best letting it shift between 2000 and 2500 RPM's. It get you up to speed fast enough for me, but not really working the motor that hard.

I drive like this and consistently get over 20mpg with mine. A typical tank for me is about 20.5 - 20.8mpg. A few weeks ago I as heading back down south from VT, I got 23.1 that tank.

 

When I actually stick to it, I can get close to 20 on 295's and full armor. It really goes in the crapper the faster I drive!

These things like to take their time.

 

I managed 20.4 on a 30 mile drive on the highway today. I am happy

 

I have had three tacomas before i was averaging about same mpg

 

Nice - that's a bit higher than i've tried using auto - i'll give that a try as i have found getting up to speed in a timely manner does help.


Didn't mention this before but tire pressure tire pressure tire pressure - that has an impact. Keep 'em in check. I'm runnin mine at 2psi over the door frame so at 34.

here are two pic's i took this morning getting out of the truck on the way into the office.
the one at 25.3mpg is my 1 hour drive into work today and the other at 22.1mpg is the time since i purchased it which equates to 36 hours of driving.

Like others have said too - fill up tank, pay bill drive off and enjoy it just is what it is with this truck...

 

Got 1300 miles on mine.Went on a trip over Labor Day.Two lane, four lane highways and back roads.RCI sliders and a LFD transfer case skid.
Two Labs and camping gear.
Got 22.7 mpg first tank and 23mpg second tank at the pump.
Just driving normal not taking it easy but not rodding it either.

 

Our Labor Day trip was 350 miles each way on 75mph highways. The worst full up was 18.4 and the best was 18.9 mpg.
This was with the radar cruise control on, I think better mpg could be had by a savvy driver with no CC.

I couldn't get over 20mpg in mine going downhill in neutral! ;-)

Mine was terrible for the first 10 - 15k or so...so bad that my 5.7 Tundra was better. I have around 25k on my 4Runner now and it gets 16.5ish.

 

@65 mph average I was getting over 20 mpg !

 

I did the Outback mod, greatly improved my mpgs

 

You bought the only car in the world that actually slower than the 4Runner!

 

Hahah it’s actually pretty preppy- that being said I drive like a grandma. I just like my creature comforts ..
I haven’t even given half throttle on the last dozen vehicles I’ve owned

Nice! I like them, too! But, they actually are slower 0-60. I only know this because I was googling acceleration times when replying to one of the many threads whining about how slow the 4runner is.

Unless you have the turbo?

 

Haha doesn’t surprise me- just shows how slow I drive in that I find it peppy.
I did not opt for the turbo- was hard enough to find this one in the current Parker conditions.
I also held off as I figured the turbo would really never see much use and would just be wasted money.

I had and traded in an outback with the 3.6 and that thing was surprisingly quick

295 miles of highway driving, 301 total miles. 14.65 gallons of gas. 20.5 miles per gallon. It is not too terrible. I was doing 75 MPH for like 100 miles. Never went below 60 MPH.
