    Just wondering if you can chip a 94 3.0 petrol 4Runner? Or any other options for more power?

    About the only thing you will find for the 3VZ-E are headers by Doug Thorley and a FIPK that K&N designed but can be gotten for a little bit less money on SUMMIT if you get there OEM equivalent kit. Those are the only smog legal options. There are no super chargers or turbos for the 3VZ-E because it is not the same engine as the 5VZ-E which is 3.4L and has 24 valves in the heads. Having owned and rebuilt my 3.0 for three years at this point getting rid of the OEM exhaust and the overly complex OEM air filter seem to have helped allow this engine to rev and make some limited but greatly appreciated additional horse power. But it is 3.0L v6 and at about 145hp with a 5,200lb. GVWR it is no hot rod. But the reliability will be there if you can get the OEM exhaust replaced with headers and I recommend 2-1/2" from the headers on back to help the engine expel the heat.

    The OEM air box pulls the cold air from behind the DS head light which as you would expect is not a thrilling place to be getting your air for the engine when your chasing down your buddy in the desert on a very silty sand wash. I have been tempted to run a snorkel into my custom made CAI shroud that I made for my K&N FIPK. The reason being that with each of the last three desert trips over the last two years the Filter literally creates small sand bars in the bottom of the sink in the garage when I wash out the filters pleats which is a great testament to the K&N filter working and keeping my VAFM dust free. But there is literally full table spoons of silt and dust that comes out of the filter once the cleaner has had its time to dissolve the oil. So a Snorkel is a very temping idea because the dust will still be at roof height but nothing like as dense as it is at the head light height.

    atgparker Hello, would you happen to know where I can get a set of Doug Thorley headers? I also live in California and from what I've read those are the only CARB legal headers available. Do you install the stock intake before smog?

    if you live in the dust/dirt, please don't put a re-usable filter in place of the paper element. While you CAN flow more air, at 145 max HP, your air filter is NOT the constriction. And washable filters by design allow more dirt to flow through, as the filtration is not as complete as a paper element.
    If you put a snorkel on the vehicle, make sure you use a pre-filter and not just a oil soaked washable.

    I picked up mine from LC Engineering but I think YotaMaster's in Corona can drop ship them from Doug Thorley as well. As for the K&N FIPK that I procured through Summit it is smog legal but the CAI shroud is custom made by me which doesn't have any issue with the visual inspection. As for air filters I have been running K&N's for a great many years starting way back in 1982 when I put one on my stock Toyota Deluxe long-bed 4x4 while attending the Fireworks 250 for that year. That filter did seem to pass some dust but was due to my not understanding how to oil it correctly. When the pleats are properly oiled and the excess is aloud to drip off the K&N is an excellent air filter and I have been very keen in seeing this work on my 3.0 since I did a complete rebuild and did not want to see any dirt get into my new engine. But make sure you clean the ruddy filter after each trip you take to the desert because running in a convoy does load it up with crap quite quickly. My son is running the same setup on his 1990 and is without a shroud and his filter gets really dirty a lot faster than does mine when we run together on the same desert trip. So the CAI shroud I made seems to help with keeping the filter cleaner.
