Trail transfer case shifting

Howdy folks, I was test driving a 2016 Trail the other day and seemed to have trouble getting it to change from low to high. At one point I managed to get gear clash. I tried in gear, out of gear (park), but we had to go before going into detail with the sales guy. So before I look too stupid at the next visit, what should I do to operate it correctly. BTW I am new to the forum and the only Toyota I have is the Avalon. I do have three Rover products, and I love them way too much, but I am getting older and really don't want to wrench too much, so a Trail is in the future. Thanks in advance for your assistance! To go from 4Hi to 4Lo and back, you need to be in neutral.

Stop, shift to neutral, engage 4Hi, wait a second, engage 4Lo, shift to D (or usually I shift to 1).

 

MeefZah is right on. I have a 2016 Trail, and 2h > 4h is on the fly up to like 50ish MPH. However, 4H > 4L requires the car to be in Neutral, and you'll notice on the gearshift itself it even shows 2H > 4H > N > 4L.

You'll know you got it when you see 4LO on the dash in Orange light. If you're doing this on pavement keep the wheels straight, there's no center diff so 4H and 4L on these need a little slip to ensure no binding.
