Dealer installed the wrong oil filter

I decided to perform my own oil change on my 2021 4Runner. The dealer did the previous oil changes… when I removed the filter, I noticed that the incorrect filter was installed by the dealer. I’m pretty upset by this since this is a brand new $43k plus vehicle.

15613-YZZA1 was labeled on the filter. The actual part number is 04152-YZZA1.

Has the dealer ever installed the incorrect oil filter in your 4Runner? What did they do to correct the issue?

Wow, I'd be mad. That is not honest mistake but most likely surplus of Camry filters shop wants to get rid of. Dishonesty is far worse than ignorance!

 

Part Numbers are similar, but damn when you install the filter it’s so obvious that the filter is too short.

 

Which dealer did the previous oil change? I'd say call them up and share this info with them.

That’s what I’m expecting…a free oil change. I’ll do my own oil changes from now on. Nobody takes care of your vehicles better than yourself. I should have known better.

 

And people wonder why so many 4R owners skip the 'free' Toyota care...

If you plan to do your own oil changes going forward, see if they'll give you some free filters and oil instead.

I would be upset too. Good thing you caught it.

Here I was whining about stripped skid bolts and you had unfiltered oil recirculating.

 

Can you imagine if I brought it back in for an oil change? They’ll just toss the used incorrect filter and act like nothing wrong ever happened.

 

True, it's very rare to get people to admit their mistakes and own up today.

 

And the next tech might have matched the wrong filter, since it was the one on your truck...

I hate to tell you this Joe but your engine is damaged. It is going to be very difficult to prove how bad. A Blackstone analysis at the very least. Running unfiltered oil in a motor does bad things. The only way to tell is to remove and completely disassemble the engine and mic all the parts. At the very least it knocked off 100,000 miles of life off the engine. There are all kinds of fine worn metal particles that are captured in the filter media. If it's allowed to pass then damage occurs.

I would demand a new motor and if they refused take them to court. This is totally unacceptable. I would be furious. Make sure you document everything.

Not ideal but I predict the engine will be fine. Document it with the dealer and just start changing it yourself. I never use the dealer for most service because they just suck. While my Runner was in for a new engine harness due to rodent damage, the dealer changed the oil. The tech broke the filter housing drain tool in the housing and left it there. There was no damage but oil rained on me when I removed the housing drain bolt.

 

That’s the problem to begin with they started using that type of filter! We get oil filters that are so close to other filters and it is the techs job to ensure that does not happen ask who the tech was and never have them touch anything else on your vehicle! And go to a different shop!
There are lots of shops that can do it for less other than the stealerships!

It's not about luck. It's all about the facts. Documentation and measurements. Bore Scope, leak down test, pulling pan/valve covers, bearing measurements, cam measurements etc. A service manual has all the wear specs of individual components. Collecting as much data as possible will lead to a positive outcome to the owner. This is gross negligence on the part of the dealership.

 

I have serviced many engines in the generator industry with cartridge filters. I do not need to own a 4Runner to assess what was done. This is not an approved filter for that engine. The upper portion of the holes were exposed to large particles being circulated in the engine. Not good. Damage is done and engine is not going to last as long under the same exact operating conditions as one that has the proper filter installed.

 

Fair enough. I am of the opinion that the damage is done and not reversible. I could go on with more of my accolades, accomplishments and achievements like yourself but I will leave it alone. I was merely qualifying myself. Not that anyone cares.....

 

Dang! I'm new enough to the 4Runner world that the dealer performed the first service, so the next one is one me and will be done by me but I had no idea that Toyota doesn't use canned oil filters like most of the rest of the automotive world. If I hadn't read this here I would have a shocker coming up when time for my 2nd service. Why do they use the old style filter cartridge instead of the canned type?

With regard to the arguments above, it does seem to me that if the cartridge is too short to seal against the top of the container that a fair amount of oil is by-passing the filter process, no?

 

In case you want a bit more peace of mind. My first move would be requesting a compression test, to begin with (This is a fast and inexpensive test, the Dealership should do this free of charge, taken into consideration the mistake they made).

I believe at factory the 4R has 220 psi. You're 4R 2021 should have a compression over 210 psi per cylinder, with no more than 3 percent variation between the highest and lowest readings between cylinders . At least this reveals the condition of your engine's valves, its valve seats, and piston rings.

 

Shit, our Rolls turbo-fans go 1000 hours between oil filter maintenance, I wouldn't even bat an eye at that. Furthermore, if they clog, it bypasses the filter anyway

 

Just did my first DIY oil/filter change last weekend and I remember you posting about this.

Were you able to dig out that broken plastic tab?

I was concerned that this would happen to me. It fits in there pretty tight.

 

Yeah wasn't bad. I depressed the drain valve and grabbed the plastic with needle nose. I think the guy pulled it forward or back to remove it which broke the plastic tool. I use a metal drain from Motivx to drain the housing.

 

That's a Tacoma 3.5L oil filter. I know because at one point I had the Tacoma and the 4Runner. The 1Z is Taacoma, 5Z is 4Runner. I mistakenly did this too, realized it a few days later and fixed.

Drove vehicle for 4 more years, 50k miles. Sold to someone else, at 85k miles, no issues.

Ideal? No, but not the immediate death sentence others might suggest. To be fair, however, it's not great..
