This could be accomplished entirely without the tracking element. And it would be a great deterrent if every vehicle sold in the US had to have it. The cost would be very small and could be absorbed in the cost of a new vehicle. And I’m not talking about giving the drunk potential driver a warning. I’m talking about the vehicle being disabled entirely until a sober driver could be summoned to drive the drunk person home. In Texas they do this with an interlock when someone is convicted of drunk driving. The problem with those is that they are very expensive to install and maintain, and they only work about half the time. If it were OEM like power steering and brakes are today they would be reliable.

Of course, District Attorneys want lots of convictions so they can get re-elected and this technology would have an impact on how many DWI plea bargains they can get. And lots of defense attorneys will find their incomes impacted. But maybe, just maybe, we can find a way to get past those things and the privacy issues and save a few lives.

Who cares? This never shows everything anyway.
Good. My family was almost exploded to death by a drunk driver when I was a kid in a nightmare scenario game of chicken with the drunk driver being on the wrong side of the road, his dome light on, and him laughing maniacally in a rainy night. I've had literal nightmares less scary than that.

And like Beachguy said, this can be done entirely without the tracking element. It doesn't have to phone home at all. Your freedoms aren't an issue.

If you bitch about this, I'm going to rip your balls off.
