Check to see gas cap is on correctly. Then, as in my case with my 2020 4Runner, check under the hood for varmints chewing on wires. Mine looked okay until I pulled off the engine cover, then 6 wires were chewed on. Squirrels did mine. It was only outside for 6 hours. Just a guess on a brand new 4Runner.

Could be one of a million things. The dealer will read the code and see what is setting it off.

I got the same symptoms and lights when my 4R had 300+ miles on it. It was a rodent-chewed injector wire. Ask the dealer to check.

Happened to me as well. Insurance will cover it. Toyota didn't want to repair the harness since it was so new so they replaced the engine harness to the cost of $9000.

Not too sure. A lot of it is under the intake manifold but there was probably a lot of work at the fuse block if it was replaced entirely. I believe it was everything forward of the ECU.

Per Toyota, they don't repair the harness if the vehicle is under a certain age. The only option was to replace it.

I only paid my deductible so it didn't bother me. If the full cost was on me, I would have swapped the pigtail.

DAMN - $9K? Saw your invoice but damn! - certainly lends credibility to having insurance! I also experienced rodent damage on my toy hauler (while staged on a mountain top in Tennessee) got into the Onan generator ignition harness - that repair was not fun at all! Then in my own backyard the critters attacked the injector harness on my 2012 Rhino but I was able to put the mouse out of my misery with a pointed stick through his throat. Japanese just need to stop making their electrical harnesses so tasty...

If I may ask, did the vehicle have 0 miles when you purchased it, how long did it take you to put 477 miles on the vehicle, how long do you have the vehicle in your possession. Did your other or previous vehicles been damaged by rodents in your garage, and was it parked in your garage?

I know for a fact that mine happened somewhere in transit to the US dealer from Japan, but didn't show up 'til 350 miles on the odo. Didn't matter, it was not covered by Toyota. I was fortunate in that the dealer tech in Durango CO had mercy on me and my family, and repaired the affected wire, and didn't even charge me. I was willing to use insurance, but didn't have to.

I guess the only way Toyota will cover it is if it happens on the test drive.

Is it possible it happened before you took possession?

Probably not it’s going through insurance. Are they gonna have to disassemble the engine to fix this? Any possible issues I should look for after it’s repaired? Will this be on carfax? Ugh

    Sorry for your trouble.

That's why I was asking, I'm nearly sure that it happened when in transit. Rodents have been discovered in vehicles and analyzed not being native to the US. How many buyers have had this problem after a couple of years or more ' few. Most cases are with new vehicles. Do you feel responsible? Why should you have to pay for it, did you purchase rodents as an accessory? If insurance involved, this will go on record. Contest, and talk to the dealer. Just trying to help, It's your 4R as well your money.

WOW … Makes you want to go buy a small rodent cage to place in engine bay … what the hell is Toyota using to insulate wiring these days; I had a co-worker tell me a story about this happening on a brand new Honda …

Soy-based wire insulation. It's like a dinner bell for the rat bastards...

As mentioned, that soy base so it's biodegradable. Honda was selling a capsaicin tape but I guess it didn't work too well. I use Grandpa Gus's peppermint oil and bags in my engine bays now.

the car was purchased in March ive been in and out of hospitals hence the low miles I can’t prove it was there 6 months ago unfortunately. It was parked in my driveway.

I see, I'm sorry to hear about the hospital and I hope you & your loved ones are fine. In the case of your 4R, this will be indeed hard to prove that this issue is related to transit.

    I wish you the best.

Thank you good sir. So peppermint or does anyone have any other ideas to keep rodents out of the truck? I’ll put a trap under it.
