Or is it an Amazon thing?

Looks like a good upgrade. Next we just need to find an aluminum thermostat/radiator hose coupler.

My uncle has owned Toyota for over 40 years. He has hit 300k plus on all of them. He told me always go with factory Toyota oil filter as it fits better versus other brands. I don’t know personally just going to take his advice due to his experience.

I'm getting ready to do my first oil change on the 4Runner.

I think I may pull the skid plate the night before, so all I have to do is drive it around a bit to warm it up without having to fight the skids on a warm vehicle.

 

I don't think I matters , my Tacoma has 200k plus I use other brands

That looks cool, but $45 can buy a lot of drain plug gaskets.

 

Well after they told me last week that the trd oil filters won't be shipped for few months they were delivered today.Ordered Aug 16th

 

I just did my first oil change today on my 21 TRDORP and used a TRD filter p/n PTR43-00079.

The filter installed into the housing a little wobbly. I am guessing this is because the rubber gasket is the only thing making contact on the bottom of the filter housing. The filter housing screwed into the vehicle smoothly with no issues.

Just wanted to check with those that have used the TRD filter that it seems a little loose compared to the non TRD filter when you put it in the holder before you install it.

 

Yeah, you're fine. There's a little spring mechanism thingy under the filter that will make it a little cattywompus before installation.

 

As an FYI the Toyota TRD oil filters and the AMSOIL Oil Filter EA15K49 are identical with the standard 25% as a preferred customer AMSOIL filters cost $22.65. I use both interchangeably.

 

I assume the TRD version is 'better' in some way - true / false??
If true - what advantages does it have?

All for the absolute best filter possible as that is THE main component that's catchin the crap from recirc for however many miles a person's preference it is to go between oil changes...

 

@nimby . Thanks. Yes, "cattywompus". That is exactly the word to describe it. Seems like the rubber gasket is the reason. But it screwed in without any fuss so I'm sure it found it's home when it contacts the top and bottom.

That being said, I like the design of the TRD filter. The rubber gaskets look like they will force oil thru the filter whereas the stock filter looks like some of it may bypass the filter at the top and bottom. I'm sure it's not much (and may not be worth the extra money) but I don't mind spending the $9 extra on a filter. Plus, it says TRD on it - even though no one will ever see that.

@josephp732 my dealer sells me the TRD filters for $14.08 (online price match). But good to know there is an amsoil option in a pinch

Make sure you're using the correct filter and it's long enough to cover all the perforations the filter slides on to. Sometimes mistakes are made where people get a corolla filter (or whatever it is) and it ends up being too short. The proper filter should cover all those perforations.

 

I have p/n PTR43-00079.

And yes, it covered all the perforations. Was actually a tiny bit taller - assuming that allows the rubber gaskets to seal on the top and bottom of the housing

 

I think I actually laughed out loud when the dealership was telling me about the free oil changes. Told them I would be doing them myself for exactly the reasons mentioned above.

This was my break in oil change with a little under 2k miles on the clock. Will do 5k intervals from here on out.

My previous vehicle (Chevy Silverado) came with free oil changes for 24k miles. The first one was fine. On the second one, they didn't even change the oil or filter. That was it for me, went back to changing it myself and never looked back. Plus I can change my oil in 1/10 the time it takes to drive to the dealership, wait for them to change it and drive home. The whole time wondering if they put the skid plate bolts in with an impact gun.

Amsoil and TRD filters:

 

Anyone know if the TRD oil filters are no longer made? A lot of Toyota sites are saying they are no longer available.

 

What is the benefit of the TRD oil filter? It’s $16 vs $4 for the regular one.

What a waste of money.

 

TRD filters are supposed to have a higher flow rate. The cheaper OEM is just fine. Stick with OEM while under warranty. Using aftermarket filters can see a dealer void a powertrain warranty if you have issues.

 

Higher flow rate? What benefit does that serve?

I only ask because all of these high mileage trucks running around seem to do it on minimal maintenance. My neighbors have three 5th gens, lowest mileage truck is 157k miles, he drives them for work and back to vacation house in Florida. He attempts to get the oil changed at 10,000 with whatever filter the auto parts store has.

 

That's what Toyota claims. I say the main benefit is to liberate more cash from your wallet. I stick to the stock filter for warranty purposes and a TRD filter would fall within that category. Aftermarket filters can be all across the board spec wise. Trust me worked for a dealer for 20 yrs.

 

Has anyone looked into an oversized filter?

I ran one when I had my GX a few years back. Added an extra quart to the capacity. Bigger filter more cleaning ability. Was doing 7.5k changes and it was still a honey color.

just a thought. Might have to research to figure out what filter would work

 

Mine was a 2004. Same thread and seal as the factory. Been looking through old notes I had from mods I did but can’t find it.

Wix had like a 51515 or something like that. If I find it I will post it for sure.

I’ve been trying to find the royal purple or the TRD filters but no where has them in stock. Summit had the royal purple but with shipping it’s $20 a filter
