    I use V-power cause That red button looks cooler than the two yellow ones. Before i had the runner i had an 06 Taco with the 2.7 4 bang. Ran nothing but shell chevron or exxon 93 the whole 9 years of owning it. Now listen to this and I need your opinion. At around 130k the catylitic converter went to shit and while changing it out, my dad swears it was from me using nothing but 93 in a low compression engine and that was causing buildup from unburnt gas. Is he right about that? Im not sure he knew that it was a vvt

    Yes, the system will adjust the timing to account for the octane difference. There is no benefit. If there was, it would be required.

    yes IMO dad is correct on 93 in a 4 banger. most vehicles designed for 87 will not have a PCM programed for 93 use .. so yes the 93 will leave some un burned fuel.
    ON some GM V8 engines PCM does have ability to change the fuel management with 91 .. 93 PCM does not have that ability. Toyota not sure if it can do it with 91..
    I did try 93 in runner and did 2 fuel tanks no change in MPG so why would I use extra $$$ for nothing gained ?
    Top tier fuels are with additives to keep the nasty alcohol from doing the damage in the fuel system for a period of time.

    As long as the computer can adjust and throw enough spark advance at the combustion chamber, then you will get better performance and usually even better fuel mileage out of higher octane. Better mileage is based on you not utilizing your right foot like it has a rock attached to it. However, that extra bit of pep could mean the difference in when your transmission downshifts to compensate for load. Now, I don't know what the maximum tables look like for octane (knock detection threshold), but I would wager you will at least see a boost in performance with 91 octane. If it is able to add enough timing in spark, and possibly even with the cams to run 93 octane efficiently and with a clean burn, well even better.

    what tuner do you have or had the tune from ON YOUR TOYOTA ?
    family member has a diablo tuner for dodge/GM .. tuner can change anything .. can change so much it can blow up the engine..

    many are looking for a performance tune .. less down shifting when going up hills on hywy @60-70MPH..also shift point change .

    $0.20 difference between reg & hi-test? Lucky you. It's at least $0.75 per gal here. This is the 1st ride Ive owned in quite awhile that uses reg and I'm not complaining.

    Just reading this thread. Good info. Dealer said only 87 on the 5th gen. Based on research it’s ok to run 91 selectively in extreme heat as the fuel burns slightly cooler. Otherwise yes, higher octane in lower compression engine isn’t necessary and could actually do harm in the long run.

    I use 87/91 because of anecdotal evidence that my vehicle performed in a certain way based on my own biased observations.

    Since we're on the topic of fuel octane, what weight oil and change frequency are ya'll doing? :bananadead:

    On the flip side, some states, especially mountain states e.g. Utah sell 85 octane rather than 87 octane.

    What do you guys think about that?

    If 85 is where you reside, then that's your option.

    Not an expert but I know higher octane burns slower so 87 more combustible than 91. Maybe easier burn better at high elevation due to efficiency? My guess of why 85 available at high altitude :notsure:

    It’s all to do with less oxygen at higher elevations. Less oxygen tends to slow the detonation, acting like higher octane gasoline. So the theory is the lower octane 85 available in high elevation areas acts like a higher octane at sea level and will save you money.

    It’s recommended that you use up most of the 85 octane in your tank and fill up with 87 or higher before returning to sea level. That’s too much bother for me, I just use 87 all the time.

    Interesting, I normally run regular 87 too, but if I'm traveling through an area with 85, then so be it.

    Never had a problem, just curious.

    I remember a trip out west in 2012 (I’m in Ohio) and at some point began noticing more options for either straight gasoline or 10% ethanol (hard to find undiluted gas in Ohio). The straight was more expensive, but I decided to opt for that for several fill-ups as an experiment. I was driving a 2001 SR5 with five people and a 4x8 U-Haul trailer. Averaging about 17mpg. The straight gas bumped me up to 19mpg. I think the octane was 90 for gas and 87 for ethanol blend. Probably a wash cost-wise, but an interesting experiment nonetheless.

    both my older brother who is a petroleum engineer, and my late father who was a mechanic and notorious cheapskate used regular all along. I've followed suit and used regular in everything from my POS '78 Malibu to my gorgeous '19 4Runner with no problems.

    On the 1GR-FE, there appears to be a slight horsepower increase when running Premium Gas.

    Instead of getting on it to get past them, let off and let them go by. Guaranteed your mileage will improve.

    I have 122k on my 2013 on all terrains and rarely get much below 20mpg because I drive conservatively.
