    Good morning,

My dog and I are going full time into RVing with my 4Runner (TRD Pro with tow package). I just bought a light RV, 3500 pounds with a GVWR of 4999 pounds.

The RV dealer is discussing an electric braking assist. I have the tow package. Does this tow package come standard with braking assist and I'm just missing it, or is there an add-on that the RV dealer can do? Or shoudl I be looking at a Toyota dealer installed option?

Apologies if the question is answered in another thread, but I wanted to introduce myself.

    Thanks!

    Steve

    Welcome from Maryland :hattip:

YES - you should install an aftermarket brake controller to assist/save your runners brakes and for all around SAFETY

I would hope your RV dealer would set you up right for your journey

Thanks everyone. I went through the link Antman sent, and it all looks pretty straightforward. Also not too ridiculously expensive. :)

Welcome to the forum. I’ve used the Tekonsha P3 and it is awesome. Would recommend. Also recommend looking into a weight distribution hitch. Makes a world of difference in how the vehicle drives and handles. I used one made by Curt and had no complaints.

    'nuther silly question....

I'm towing a 4000 pound trailer, and it's....mostly OK, since the 4Runner is rated at 5K.

Is there a relatively inexpensive way (say $500 or so) to give the rear suspension a boost? Maybe stiffen it just a little bit so it doesn't squat down? I'm finding that I can't get the tailgate all the way open in some situations, as it hits on the electric jack assembly on the trailer. My dog finds it incredibly inconvenient to have to duck and jump in.

I recall back in my younger days, my 72 chevy I had some hard rubber "assists" to stuff in between the coil springs - not sure if that's an acceptable solution these days.

    Any assistance greatly appreciated.

    Airbags.
Also slightly stiffer springs could be an option to handle the extra weight in the first place too.
Lastly, yes those rubber things are your bump stops. Timbren, SumoSprings, DuroBumps, SuperBumps... take your pick.

    Thanks Incrediboy (loved that movie...)

I'm thinking the stiffer springs might do the trick. I'm going to be running this trailer all over North America in the next 18 months, and I should probably take that step sooner rather than later.

Any idea what a ballpark cost might be? I'm not handy or confident enough to do the work myself, nor I do I have the tools or shop space, so I'll be using the most versatile tool in my toolbox - the credit card.

I have been using a Tekonsha Prodigy RF wireless brake controller since 2013 with my 2011 FJ and now my 2020 4R. These controllers work great and save you the hassle and cost of having a wired in controller installed.

Do you have any pictures of your 4R and trailer combo?

Ballpark cost for actual springs themselves... maybe $120 to $200 per spring max, depending on what rate you choose, linear or progressive, and which company (eg. Eibach, Dobinsons, Old Man Emu, etc). As for install cost, of course its going to vary based on what shop you go to. But in general you can count on about $80 to $120 per hour of labor. Actual install time should not be much, 2-3 hrs at most, this is quite a simple task honestly.

However if you are actually interested in airbags, that will obviously take much more time to install the bags, air pump, and route air lines and cabling. Firestone and AirLift I think are the most common names youll find for those that work with our trucks

Thanks! Seems manageable. I think I'll go the new springs route.

Appreciate all the responses and assistance!

UPDATE - I got a quote to install the Airlift Airbags kit for about $600. This is to beef up the rear suspension for towing. When not towing, the installer is suggesting the ride will be stiffer (as a long time jeep wrangler owner, what do I care about smooth suspension?)

Total kit and install runs about $600. Does this seem reasonable?

Before I commit, does anyone have any other advice on how to stiffen up the suspension? The trailer is within the 4Runner specs (4000 pounds) but eventually I'll be putting my 600 pound motorcycle in there as well.
