question about rear seat anatomy

T4R SR5 in Classic Silver

so I'm trying to figure out why the middle section of the back seat is so uncomfortable.got the seat out, and I found that there is a 5x5 metal plate about dead center under the foam on the seat bottom....explains why it's so hard. anybody here know what purpose this plate serves?

Besides lumbar support, or load bearing support for when the seat is folded flat, I would guess collapesable energy absorbing structure if you got rear ended.
