I just got a Hest Dually mattress for sleeping in the back of my ORP, as I really don't want to get a RTT right now. The problem is, while sleeping inside, all of my storage needs to get moved out. I'm wondering how others deal with security from critters (and even humans) for boxes. I'm also thinking of removing rear seat bottoms and using boxes to extend the mattress slightly (and if anyone could help me do that, would be much appreciated). Not sure how hard that it is to do myself. Anyone have any recommendations for storage outside (beyond the roof)? Is storing boxes latched, but not locked, outside at night advisable (provided there's no food and all food is hung up in a bear bag)?

Assuming no bear issues, I just store it outside next to truck in secured boxes and/or cooler. Works fine for So Cal desert or Baja trips.

    Agreed with @Nutmegtheref .

I keep some of my gear in plastic totes and leave them outside a lot while camping. Of course, there might be places where that isn't advisable due to animals or concerns about theft. A lockable roof-top cargo box might be ideal in those situations for storing valuable gear.

I moved as much stuff to my front seats as possible, as well as inside rooftop rifle cases that were padlocked. Blue Ridge Overland also makes an attic net that attaches to the clips of the headliner in the cargo area and to the grab handles of the backseat to provide overhead storage over the trunk space: https://www.blueridgeoverlandgear.com/collections/4runner/products/toyota-4runner-attic , although it's not an outdoor option.

To remove the seat bottoms, pry up the plastic covers (right about where your Achilles tendon would be if you were sitting on the seat). Then remove the 14mm head bolts with a socket. Pull the seat bottom forward and up to remove. Reinstall is the reverse. Be careful not to cross thread the bolts putting them back in.

Rubbermaid 8 gal Action Packers fit nicely in the rear seat footwells. They also are the same height as the folded forward rear seat back so they defacto extend your sleeping area.

I put all my stuff in the front seats overnight. The cooler and cook box I leave outside, partially under the back of the rear bumper. Make sure your cookware is clean, and make sure your cooler is bear rated (ie Grizzly brand). I've never had an issue with animals and I've camped this way a lot in some very bear infested areas. Humans, also never had a problem with...

I use the front seats for food coolers, otherwise, depending on the season, it all goes up on the roof rack with tie down straps.
Clothes/gear in plastic totes, food/drinks in coolers.
