The consensus is use 5W-30. Full synth wasn't mainstream yet back in 3rd gen times but now We Have The Technology

    I use 5/30 full syn. Change it & oem filter @ 7500.
Its not all black at that stage ..
No drips and replace crush washer about every 3rd one..
Currently 150k ,no drips but taking off the skid plate every time is sometimes a pain...

Use mobil 1 5w20 syn extend performance high mileage since I do 32k miles a year.
Change about every 6 or even 8k and runs great! Bit a pain to change conventional so often

None. Bone Stock. EXCEPT: Brushguard, tow hitch, both welded to the frame. It's good to have friends and a fully equipped garage!
Personally, I use Castrol Syntec, High Mileage oil, 5W30, and the Toyota 90915-YZZD filter.
I use the Castrol Syntec due to an amazing experience I had with it in an old Kawasaki 4 cylinder Police bike I had. I participated in a Memorial Day Parade down in Yuma many years ago, 89 or 90. It wasn't a very hot day, as Yuma goes, I think 105° or 110° F. We all got on the parade route, but things were worse than the LA traffic. Lots of sitting there, not moving. Well, the people with the air cooled bikes like I had were getting mighty warm, just sitting like that. MIGHTY warm. :bananadead:
We started doing patterns around the float for our bike shop, not that big. Back and forth, around in circles, around one another, just ANYthing to get the bikes cooled down some. The parade announcers made a big deal out of it, saying we had been practicing for months to do these maneuvers, and so on. Most of us had signed on that morning, BTW :D

Anywho, it got through the parade, and no one's engine seized, that I knew of, anyway. I got the bike home, and was expecting a horrible burnt smell to the oil. Nope! It was clean and clear, no scent, and, for what it's worth, felt just as slick to my fingers as a quart of new I had. I know, not a super scientific test but heck, what I could do.

Ever since then, that's all I've ever used in all my vehicles, bikes AND 4 wheel vehicles.

Long winded, I know, but that's my reasoning.

High mileage is snake oil in my opinion but I'm no scientist or mechanic. Use what the manual says and keep it changed at least that interval or a little sooner.

To tighten them can make it worse. 3rd gen Runners are known for this. I just had my gaskets replaced a190k miles.

BTW, I use 5/30 Castrol Synthetic blend in my 3rd gen, and full synthetic in my 5th gen.
Can hardly find oil anymore that is not at least a blend, ( other than crap that is. )

I wouldn't say it's snake oil per say. High mileage oil just has shit that "helps" to stop and prevent leaks by expanding the seals of the engine. So it swells all the rubber seals and such. I personally wouldn't use high mileage unless absolutely nessasry to prevent leaks, but if I'm leaking, there is a lot more I should worry about than high mileage oil vs non high mileage lol

I have a 1998 Toyota Tacoma SR5 4 cyl with 437,000+ miles currently on it. I've owned it since 2004. I expect it to last at least 500,000 miles, it still runs well. For years I've uses Quaker State 5W30 conventional. Any leaks I've had, I had repaired. On long trips I do need to add oil, so I assume it must be burning some oil (I don't see any leaks or smoke). In the past 1 - 2 years I've read about and started using Prolong oil treatments with every oil change, change my oil every 3000 - 5000 miles. Lately I've seen that getting conventional oil is harder to find, and I was told probably in the next couple of years synthetic is all I'll be able to find...which even now is mostly true. So, I need to make the switch to synthetic oil and I'm looking for recommendations. So far, it looks like Mobil 1 5W-30 High Mileage or Valvoline 5W-30 High Mileage might be good choices. Any thoughts appreciated.

I run with 10w30 synthetic blend in my 190k mile limited. I cannot find any traditional oil anymore that is not a blend. Will not put pure synthetic in it though.

I put pure synthetic in mine last time because the store ran out of blend, no catastrophic engine failure as expected because it doesn't matter on these engines.

Engines like ours that were designed to run on dino oil don't care if you switch to synthetic, dino, or a blend. All that matters is you change it every 6000 miles or so, the engine will run fine if you use pure synthetic.

An engine designed to run on synthetic should only run on synthetic.

On the older ones, it is said, to go to full synthetic is fine, but, can resilt in oil leaks due to the thinner viscosity getting past seals and gaskets....dunno, but that's what I read, and I don't want to find out.
Full synthetic in my 5th gen though.

I run Castrol Syntec full synthetic in all mine, without a bit of trouble in any of them. I have 325,000 on my pickup, and 369,000 on my 99 4Runner. A mere 175,000 on my 87 4Runner.
    I run 10W30 in the 87's, and 5W30 in the 99.

The worst oil leaks I have are in the pickup. The crankshaft has the groove in it, and next time I replace the front seal, I'll use one of the offset ones to counter that little problem. It gets a little messy, but not really that bad. A few paper towels, problem solved.

I use the Castrol because I had a motorcycle, a 75 Kawasaki Police Special, 4 cylinder. Used it to participate in a parade, in Yuma. It got a little warm, shall we say. I expected to have burnt oil when I got home, but no, no problem at all. No burnt smell, still slick as heck on my fingers, the whole nine. So, since then, I use it in all my vehicles. If it could stand up to the abuse that parade put it through, it can handle ANYthing.

    Have fun!
