Another though I don’t know for sure but they might be able to remove that plastic fender trim and repaint in a booth by itself. Since it’s not old paint and it’s just white (not pearl) I would think they would not have to try to blend the paint either. If they can remove that peace I’d definitely do it. That’s much easier

BTW Pablo be happy you got White. It is the very best color for an off road rig. It does not show imperfections or scratches like dark colors.

I recommend for you to tape off and sand around that spot and either get some touch up spray, pen or bottle with brush to cover it. I do have sympathy for you. That first scratch or ding to a new vehicle is always a bit of a bummer. I think every single member who replied would not be too happy to see this on their under 300 mile new vehicle.

So funny story to lighten up the mood. This is along the lines you are describing concerning off roading.

A few weeks back I took my White 05 GMC sierra 2wd into the local mountains up a dirt backroad. When I arrived at around 14:00hrs it was packed. And on a damn weekday!! Everything from Subaru Outbacks to 50K+ rock crawler Jeeps looking for a "Yellow Post" camp sight. It was like cockroaches racing to find a spot. This was all on smooth and wide fire roads.

Well I knew of a Yellow Post campsite spot off the beaten path and was not sure my truck could make it. I tried to remember how hard it was to navigate as the last time I was on it was with my Beta dual sport bike. Rocky, narrow and branches scraping my freshly waxed truck. I made it and not one vehicle to be seen!!

Later when I was rinsing off my truck a local reminded me that most of these guys that have an expensive rig are afraid of getting a small scratch or ding. That is not me at all. As long as my rig is mechanically sound, the aesthetics are not that big of a deal. If it's not a major crunch or crumbled body part, I don't stress about it too much.

That’s a good attitude to have. I eventually got to that point with my old 2000 4R. After a while I rarely even waxed it. Just an occasional car wash spray wand. And my paint was fine.

But the OP does have a point about paint quality in general. It does seem to be less durable than 10 years ago or so, due to EPA rules about VOCs. Supposedly the clear coat is “softer” and gets scratched easier.

Maybe Pavo is just having a rough day or weekend with this event happening to his new ride. Maybe he spoke or wrote without thinking it through or truly knowing what happened.

I know I would be ticked off also in general. I think it’s reasonable that regardless of how it happened any of us would be bummed with only 300 miles.

It definitely appears that something hit that area to me but I was not driving it.

Pavo I am not really sure what happened but I feel for you man. I have 460 miles on mine and I’d feel awful is something happened to mine. The first one always hurts but 300 miles is early on. Get her checked out and see about having that piece repainted. It will be worth the money and a lot of good shops will make it look like nothing ever happened.

Screw the money on fixing it you already paid $40k plus or whatever so what’s a few hundred more at this point to feel better and not think about it. Obviously this is just my opinion

More paint coming off. Judge what you will but can you say this looks like quality?

Now some of that looks to be a factory defect. Have you considered to get it paint under warranty. My experience with bumper to bumper has been really good across all manufacturers. Have it checked for delamination which is 100% covered under warranty.

Agreed Pavo that is not a chip or neglect. Something is wrong. I’d be furious also. I would return it to your dealer ask them to order you another unit another color.

I can see repainting a small section but not large sections of a new unit.

    Boy everyone is grumpy today!
I get that super white paint is NOT super ..........it 's a single stage paint process. (we all know this.0
I get that a stone chipped his paint. (probably a less than $500 fix at a body shop?)

I just got back from the dealership and suprise they told me to kick rocks (pun intended) said it was rock chips and that they saw the blister in the paint but that was caused by rock chips and they blamed my wildpeaks. They suggested I don't take it off roading even though that's literally the model and I told him I haven't yet so if it were rock chips I got it driving around town and he just said that sort of thing happens which I get.

They did an estimate and it was $1700 to repaint the fender flare and the chip on the door.

He did tell me not to worry that I'm under warranty and if my paint really is defective they would fix it (which I know is bs)

So basically at the end of the day kids, rock chips will f up your car especially if you have white toyota paint, not going to lose any sleep over it, I guess touching up my paint with touch up paint will be part of general maintenance and hopefully enough white painted toyotas get fd up where there is a class action and i get a free paint job in 20 years lol.

I will still enjoy the car and not lament over it. I rather take a crap garbage paint job over a crap engine or frame

Toyota won’t fix your paint. Even if it’s actually defective.

You do have the option to escalate this. From the observations of the last picture it looks like defective paint where it's bubbling. I don't have a lot of experience with Toyota dealers and their procedures for warranty work. I can only comment on GM vehicles where the bumper to bumper warranty process was seamless.

I do agree that you might as well touch it up yourself. While Toyotas are very reliable vehicles, I have heard horror stories on getting any kind of warranty work done.

That is true, it is documented with corporate and the dealer so hopefully the paint doesn't get too further compromised or else I will raise holy hell.

As reliable as toyotas are, getting warranty work can be a hellish nightmare, something I've witnessed first hand and if you have any mods (including tires), they will use that as an excuse even if it's completely unrelated. That's with any manufacturer though and I still believe toyota makes a quality product. The funny/sad thing is the paint on my 97 4runner is exceptional for its age and I would bet my milk money in 10 years the paint on my 97 will look better than the paint on this one

Genuinely curious, wouldn’t it benefit dealers to actually help out customers and take in the warranty repairs? They (dealer) get paid by corporate Toyota, so it seems like it would be easy revenue for them. I know I must be missing something, but just got me thinking.

Dealers make a lot less money on warranty work versus cash customers.

I think Pavo needs a district rep to come to his dealer. Even then it’s tough.

I would not spend $1,700. I trade the damn thing in now or sell it and order another. If he has 300 miles on it should sell very fast. Drive that old one for a while Pavo.

Did you take it off-road though? Did I misread? Does the more agressive tire make sense to kick up or hold stones ?

If chips and dings and gouges bother you Soo much, then, I have to ask why you; don't you just get a nice sedan, and a Bra for it. Then stay on asphalt.
Have lived through all kinds of chips and such. Unless someone starts making rubber bodies....it's gonna happen....to ANY paint job, by any Mfr.

It did happen on asphalt lol. This is probably my 8th toyota 4x4 and I do everything from mild to wild and the fact of the matter is the paint is really soft, none of my other toyotas were like this. Like I said it's whatever just pointing it out

I DO sympathise with you. I have always hated it when an imperfection, ( blemish ) appears on a vehicle of mine. Have learned to realize, it's not perfect anymore.
If, in fact, your paint IS faulty, I really ( unfortunately ) do not feel like you will get any ( Dealer ) restitution.
    Good luck Bud!

Got another chip at 732 miles, for the sake of argument I'm not going to blame the paint, all I've driven on are paved roads and yes to not start an argument I will say I am the unluckiest guy out there (purposely avoid big rigs and other trucks and keep a safe following distance etc)

So the reason I am here is to ask two questions, I know it's hard to tell but is that bare metal? It almost looks like toyota doesn't use any primer at all and my 2nd question is will simply touching up with touch up paint be ok? That i can live with. I obviously don't want to be trapping rust and have it rusting underneath but also at the same time I'm anticipating a lot more of these and I can't sand and do a 5 stage prep for each tiny little chip.

If its just primer and not exposed to bare metal I'm willing to say f it and live with it or if touch up paint will suffice that's great to at this point

If it really bothers you that much I would buy a system like Dr. Colorchip and just touch up the truck as you go. It wont adhere to plastic very well but metal body panels are a piece of cake. I can not tell if that is down to bare metal or not.

My 2019 after two years off off roading, travel and camping has its share of chips, rub marks and pinstripes....it adds character.
