    Just bought it.
I'm a 63-year-old RN set to retire in about three years, when I aim to hit the road full-time. I was a single dad for a long time. My daughter just had a baby. I don't know why, but, man, I love being called Grandpa. I keep reading about folks who don't know what to do with themselves after retirement, come to be depressed about it, and soon pass away. I just don't understand it. Hell, I'd retire right now if I could do it. I can hardly wait. The day after I hit my sixty-six years and eight months, I'm outta here! Done! Done and down the road....-- In he meantime, though, I'm preparing for it. I work four nights a week in a busy hospital unit. I use the remaining three nights to run around in my 4Runner, camp out, occasionally crash at cheap hotels along the California coast, and read and learn what other folks are doing on the road. I left home when I was fifteen and never went back. I talked with my dad once more, many years later. He said, "I've just begun to learn how to live, and it's time to die." Truth, come late, is still truth.

    Be safe.

Welcome, and you have reached the rite of passage point in life. Like my best friend who is retired, I told him to embrace retirement/family since this is what he's worked for all his life. Like you, I'm building my 4R to hit the road for points west. Not much family left, so I'm going to enjoy the remainder of my years doing "lite" off-roading and "lite" overland camping.

None. Bone Stock. EXCEPT: Brushguard, tow hitch, both welded to the frame. It's good to have friends and a fully equipped garage!
Welcome aboard! Great bunch we have here.

I tell ya, if you're gonna look for a cheap hotel along the California Coast, I wish you luck anywhere between Santa Cruz, and the Oregon Border. Cheap aint in their vocabulary. Heck, maybe even as far south as the Mexican border. The costs of things like that in California have just gotten ridiculous.
The crime in the Coastal cities is just out of hand, too, so beware. San Diego to Santa Barbara is very dangerous. San Francisco Bay Area isn't all that safe either. Just be very, very wary, anywhere in California cities.
Don't go barefoot, either. Used drug needles are everywhere, and can be deadlier than a druggie with an illegal handgun. Watch yourself on the beaches. ANY of them.

Other than all that, have a great retirement. I tried to move back to California when I retired, but gave up quick, for cost, and danger. Heck, I though Yuma was bad, and it IS, believe me, but it's nothing by comparison.

Good luck, and welcome once again :D

Welcome to the forum from Wisconsin!

I'm a long way from retirement, but looking forward to it as well! I believe you have the right idea. Find things to do, go explore, and do some relaxing as well. This can be the best time if your life!
