The 3.0’s were notorious for faulty head gaskets. Wouldn’t hurt to check compression as well.

    Hi:
In order to assist a cold engine to readily start, a cold start injector (CSI) is mounted in the upper plenum on the passenger side of the motor.
It squirts extra fuel during the crank, and initial run up of a cold engine under control of a timer circuit.
After a designed timeout period, it will shut off the CSI, relying on the 6 main injectors to maintain engine run.
Is it the wire to this injector that you found burned, and disconnected?
Normally if this wire is disconnected, the injector wouldn't go active, and the engine would be hard to start, cranking for a long time before the main injectors would finally get enough fuel flow going.
But... if the CSI was electrically shorted, burned the wire off, and failed in the active condition, it could cause the symptoms you describe.
Remove the CSI and dangle it into a small cup with the engine running to see if it is squirting fuel with the plug disconnected.
If it is squirting all the time during engine run, you have discovered your problem.
    Good Luck.
    Art.
