Making the switch from a Jeep Rubicon Unlimited to the TRD Off Road. The Jeep is fine, I bought it used a couple of years ago from a friend, he gave me a decent deal, and it's only got 34k miles on it, mostly on dirt roads in the 4 corners region.

The thing is, what I really wanted at the time was a 4Runner! So, here we are. Our blue Off Road is just unloading at the port, apparently, so, should be here I dunno when, 3 weeks? More? Dealer says end of the month.

I'll probably swap tires for something like K02s in the stock size, or maybe 275/70, add a roof rack, winch bumper and some off road lights. The Jeep has the Gobi rack, which I'm not sorry to see go, looking for something flat, like a Front Runner 3/4 length. Mainly use the rack as a platform for my photography, and carrying the rotopax.

Started looking at bumpers, I've found the winch and better tires more important to me than a lift and bigger tires, at least on the Jeeps I've had. I stick to dirt roads, have gotten stuck in soft sand on occasion.

Would love to mount my old Hella Rallye 4000's on the front. They're kind of an anachronism, but I like that old school look of the big round light! I've even got a set of Cibie Oscars, dunno where they'd go.

Anyhow, nice to meet everyone, looking forward to learning from everyone's experience!

    -Andrew

Welcome! I came here from a Wrangler, too, and I miss the Jeep -- especially the manual transmission.

That said, the 4Runner is a great rig. I can't believe how smoothly the transfer case shifts. So this is what it's supposed to feel like. Love the SofTex seats, the roll-down rear window, and KDSS, too.

Thanks everyone! I live in New Mexico. Love the desert!

And, so, I like to photograph the desert - I'm fascinated seeing how water travels across the land, probably the result of a geology class we had in 7th grade science!

I'll miss the Jeep, it has character. I've owned 8 of them since my first flat-fendered CJ2a, to this Wrangler. I've also had a couple of Toyota pickups, the 89 V6 went over 300k miles with zero mechanical failures, just maintenance. I'm a big fan of Toyotas, and maintaining a vehicle, two things I've passed on to my son who owns a 4x4 Tacoma.

None. Bone Stock. EXCEPT: Brushguard, tow hitch, both welded to the frame. It's good to have friends and a fully equipped garage!
Welcome to the forums from south-central Oregon!
I'm glad you do. I'm sorry, but I grew up in a redwood forest, that's what I love. I got stationed in Yuma, Az, in 1980, my first real "permanent" duty station. I hated it. I hated it from the first day I arrived, and for the nearly 30 years I lived there. Circumstances just kind of conspired to keep me there. I must have really T'd off the gods of Karma when I was a kid, cause they really took their revenge on me.
I lost an eye, got married, then divorced 15 years later, got a metal plate in one arm, raised 5 kids, out of the 7 I admit responsibilty for, had 3 bad motorcycle accidents, and a few minor ones, just all sorts of bad karma. Overall, though, was just my general dislike of the desert.
I finally was able to move, once the kids were grown and gone. Since things had gotten to where I had to carry a firearm just to be able to walk out my front door, it was time to GTFO of there.

But hey, if you like it in the desert, more power to ya :D I spent a couple weeks in Deming, trying for part of it to keep snow off our balloon. Never a dull moment, and far from the "hot" you expect from the desert! I wish you all the best, and hope you get some good photos of it. :)

    Have fun!
    Pat☺

You've had quite a life! I can understand your feelings, I grew up on the east coast, surrounded by trees. I hated it! Funny how that is. My son spent some time in the Afghan desert, but still enjoys coming to visit the desert here. So, one never knows how things are going to affect us. The high desert is a different place than the Mojave, personally I love the Northern Nevada / SW Oregon region, it's like another planet, and so few people!

Live and let live. I had an old square body Suburban that was such a great truck. No vehicle is perfect, I found the 4 door Wrangler not as much fun as my old CJ7, but not as useful as a full size Grand Cherokee. It was just too in-between for me. I wouldn't mind an old, ratty Wrangler with no top, no back seat and covered in dust. :)

Ahhh, it arrived! Just when I think I have a couple of months, the dealer calls and tells me someone backed out on a deal, and do I want the one on the lot? Uhh, yeah!

So, hours of signing my life away later, I have a white 5th gen.

    Congratulations!
Interesting it already has a TRD skid plate. Hope they didn't rape you for that.

It came from the factory that way, along with the wheels. There's no negotiations on these, at least not where I am. At this point, if you don't pay a markup you're doing ok. If someone else got one recently, and below MSRP, or negotiated any factory add-ons off their price, I'd love to hear that story.

This. Hard to get anyone to understand this who isn’t buying a vehicle right now. Same case here as i am getting some addons I’ll just have to sell.

Yup, and the market for used vehicles is crazy. My trade-in on the Rubicon was higher than what I paid for it 2 years ago. At first, I looked at Land Cruisers in my price range, but, just couldn't see spending that much on a truck with 100k miles, even if they do last forever.

Man that'd be my dream 4runner. Love the white painted to match everything on them
