I haven't used any in my '19 yet. 53K miles so far and it runs great.

I do a lot of highway driving. I wonder if vehicles that get driven in the city a lot are more prone to buildup. :notsure:

I hear this really helps with the 4Runner's attitude.

    That it does ;)

Fuel additives. Me thinks if one consistently runs Top Tier fuel they're in far better shape than those who do not. My hunch is manufacturers advise using an additive based on those who do not run Top Tier 99% of the time. But, that's just me.

If you don’t drive long enough to get the oil/engine hot enough gunk builds up even with top tier gas like my truck is used during the for short trips that is killing my ride hence the regular use of additives

My wife is a senior marketing executive. We don’t buy much stuff. Or I don’t without the occasional shit...

That said modern fuels are highly refined, thus they don’t require additives.

I’d only recommended stabilizing additives if it sits for long periods.

Well my buddy was a Volkswagen/Acura mechanic. He would get a can of BG every job. Sometimes he would add it, sometimes not... They put that stuff in your ride whether you know or not..,

Back in 1987 when I was picking up my RX-7 Turbo II, the Mazda service manager recommended using Techron every oil change (3K miles back then). I've been using Techron ever since.

I use Techron gas cleaner and I put marvel mystery oil 2 oz in the gas tank. every year . I use only 6K miles /yr..
all my vehicles work with no fuel issues.
when I change my oil the oil looks new change the oil every year with the 6K miles ..I use the SN PLUS spec ...MPG is around 19MPG.
I inspect the air cleaner every spring and fall to clean up some debris .. vacuum it ..

I know you didn't ask, and you're welcome to tell me to buzz off. Okay;)

but - fwiw.....and you're likely not using enough to hurt anything - but - as much as I like Marvelous Marv's Mystery oil(and I do) it is bad for catalytic converters.

My Dad ran a shop years ago and he used to sell the BG fuel treatment in a can to customers that really needed it. Years ago certain model carbureted engines used to have issues where you could really hear and feel the difference when you added a can. Sometimes that didnt work and he would pour water in the carb and rev the shit out of the motor. That would clean the top end too. Now I think its a waste of money on moder motors but it doesnt hurt if you use it. Use top tier fuel, change your oil regularly and you should be fine. The one detail that marvel mystery oil that I didnt like is that if you put it in your gas it lowers your octane. Again I'm not sure it really matters anyway.

    From OM.

    ■ Recommendation of the use of gasoline containing detergent additives

●Toyota recommends the use of gasoline that contains detergent additives to avoid the build-up of engine deposits.

●All gasoline sold in the U.S.A. contains minimum detergent additives to clean and/or keep clean intake systems, per EPA's lowest additives concen- tration program.

Toyota strongly recommends the use of Top Tier Detergent Gasoline. For more information on Top Tier Detergent Gasoline and a list of marketers, please go to the official website www.toptiergas.com.

    ■ Recommendation of the use of low emissions gasolineGasolines containing oxygenates such as ethers and ethanol, as well as reformulated gasolines, are available in some cities. These fuels are typically acceptable for use, providing they meet other fuel requirements.

Toyota recommends these fuels, since the formulations allow for reduced vehicle emissions.

back in the old days with carbs on the engines , the carbs have a float in the carb then the float drops a bit then the gas at idle creates too much gas in the intake manifold ... also the charcoal canister locks up then the vent sucks gas into the vacuum line ... then because the plugs are carboned up with too much gas rev the engine 2000 RPM then use a water spray bottle into the carb remove the carbon ...
new gas destroys floats in carbs .. some floats new will restrict new gasoline damage.

I've only used the cleaners rarely. Like maybe once in 50,000 miles or so on vehicles i got new and know full history on. For used cars i use it a few times over the first 2 or so oil change intervals.

If you use good gas, follow regular maintenance, and take a 20 minute or longer drive at least once a week (burns off potential moisture or other crud) then additives shouldn't really be needed.

Using that vitamins analogy, if you eat good quality and balanced foods, then you the benefit of vitamin supplements isnt much. But, if your diet is crap, you may well have deficiencies that cause other health symptoms.
A doc i worked with years ago published a study about how a lot of his patients had low vitamin D and once supplemented to bring levels up, some other conditions went away.

Cars and how people treat them varies just like bodies and how we treat them varies. Some will benefit from additives/supplements and some wont see a difference.

Pretty much, I think they make floats that are ethanol resistant though.

lots of different experiences reflected here....I've got an old Trailblazer that only gets driven around town...every now and then I'll dump some Techron in and make an exit-to-exit run about 30 miles on I-75 (what me dear father called the Italian Tune Up)...but I don't know that it does any real good. My older brother is a petroleum engineer...never uses any additives in any of his vehicles.

I haven’t in the past. But I noticed a difference with the Lucasoil added. And the BG, it kind of ran different not rough but slower actually. Until the NEXT fill up then it will pick up better than before added. Not much but noticeable.

I could add a gallon of Sunoco 115 octane? That should unlock a couple ponys.

I asked the guy to test my emissions . well the guy said it was lower emissions than a new vehicle .. 12PPM ..

my brother inlaw has 1950's sedans ... he has to change the carb floats....I did say to him look up the carb floats that resist alcohol ..probably old parts ... for 50's carb parts..
gas lines rubber breakdown ... I had to lookup the spec for alcohol to resist new gasoline...

I’ve been running Amsoil pi every three months, lol in my 15 Tacoma for the last few years and also in my wife’s 19 Pilot. We run top tier gas. I may just scale it back.
