You're living in the past. I work in corporate security for a multi-national company that has a major manufacturing facility in Mexico. We are losing money hand over fist to quality issues, and a skyrocketing crime rate. Mexico is imploding. The US media won't report it, but things are getting bad South of the border. We have employees in a "good" part of town getting abducted monthly. Trucks get hijacked, employees are caught stealing materials and product daily. It's becoming Portland down there.

I just wish they had not used that name, ( Maverick ).
For those old enough to remember, the original Maverick was a POS little sedan.

Haha, you’re so right. As I posted in another thread,
My sister had one for her first car. It had no power steering and no glove box. It’s engine sounded awful and I thought it was a POS. Even by 1970s standards.

Brother, take it from a former long distance commuter: while it would seem gas mileage should be the first thing to focus on, reliability should be primary. Comfort too, of course. Reliability is everything when doing long distance. Buying a first production vehicle that looks snazzy and is cheap... who wants to be the Guinea Pig for the first model year and also have to explain why you are always late or missing work? Ford hasn't built anything reliable in a long time. Google the news articles about the reliability and safety issues regarding the Fusion, the Fiesta, the EcoSport and the Focus. I'm sure there are quite a few lawsuits too. Just my 2 cents.

Was reading a Motor Trend article on the Badlands Ford Bronco Sport vs the Jeep Compass Trailhawk the other day. Kind of a fun read:
    https://www.motortrend.com/cars/for...eep-compass-trailhawk-comparison-test-review/

I got a laugh from this quote:

Let's cut to the chase: The name "Trailhawk" is no longer the standard by which compact SUV off-road packages will be measured. That honor now belongs to "Badlands." The Bronco Sport so thoroughly outperformed the Compass off-road, there's no saying it any other way. Other Jeep Trailhawks should take notice.

"I'd like to know what trail this was rated on," senior features editor Jonny Lieberman said, pointing to the Trail Rated badge on the Jeep's side. "Sure wasn't the Rubicon, as the Compass struggled to make it up the not-so-tough Swansea-Cerro Gordo Road. Whereas I can't remember the Bronco Sport's forward progress ever being stopped, off-roading with the Jeep was an exercise in frustration."

The Bronco Sport shares engines with the Ranger and new Maverick. If they ever add a rear locker to the Maverick I might be interested. I spec'd one out and it came to just over $30k for what I'd want in it. That's significantly cheaper than my TRD Rav4. I'd test drive one. Might be fun.

Those guys are the last people I would take truck or suv advice from. One time they tested a Taco, Jeep Cherokee, and a few others to see which was the best rock crawler. Guess who won? The Cherokee even though it got stuck repeatedly. Why did it win? It had a Hemi and was fun to drive on the road. LMAO

Reminds me of TFL on youtube, in there recent Toyota 4Runner review they couldn't figure out how to shift into 4wd much less 4low.

The Maverick is getting rave reviews. As some have pointed out in this thread (e.g. me :hattip:lol) it’s a genius idea. In this piece here it’s pointed out how the Maverick is a revival in spirit of the Model A pickup, a truck that transformed the lives of small farmers and tradesmen almost 100 years ago. And how the Maverick is actually bigger and more capable than the small and popular pickups of the past — all while being incredibly inexpensive and fuel efficient, and quite nice to drive and to be in.
    https://www.roadandtrack.com/reviews/a37882119/ford-maverick-review/

No, it’s not a competitor for the 4Runner or the Tundra. But for a lot of people it will be a more sensible choice than a Tacoma — with a lower price, much better MPG and still more capability than they need (including a legit 1500 pound payload). And for many others it will be a much more fun and useful alternative to the economy sedan or crossover they’d otherwise buy.

I think my next purchase is going to be an honest sports car (keeping the 4R of course). But if I really needed an inexpensive and efficient commuter? I’d be looking at this instead of something like a Civic or Corolla.

I have no fondness for Ford, but I gotta say Well Done. The Maverick is gonna sell like hotcakes — especially if the quality is at least average.

Damn did the Maverick get uglier with that Grill / headlight combo?

    Quoting from that article:

"The internal combustion component of the hybrid drivetrain is a 2.5-liter, Atkinson-cycle, DOHC, variable valve timed, 16-valve four. With no turbo around to boost its output, it’s rated at a modest 162-horsepower at 5600 rpm and 155-pound feet of peak torque at 4000 rpm while running on premium grade gasoline. But add in the thrust from the electric engine and total system output rises to 191-horsepower. That’s a wholly adequate amount of power for a work appliance. Exciting? Nah.

For Ford, the exciting part of the hybrid equation is that it builds the electric motor itself. This new motor is cheaper than the vendor-supplied motor it continues to use in other hybrids but no different in output. The cheaper 94-kilowatt whirlamajig is critical considering the Maverick’s sub-$20,000 advertised (but not really) starting price. It is the cheapest hybrid on the market."

    Is premium required?

Based on what I’ve read, 87 is acceptable but 91 is recommended “for increased performance” on both of the motors avail for this trucklet.

The base Maverick comes with FWD and a 2.5 litre - hybrid with CVT. You can option a 2.0 litre EcoBoost and 8spd on this base trim, but all models with AWD come with the EcoBoost.

Impressively, the MSRP for the 255hp EcoBoost motor, AWD and 4,000 pound towing package is only about 25k.

My two German-made BMWs were almost flawless, but I didn’t keep either that long. About 72k on the 09 328 and only around 40k on the 2016 M235.

My 2015 VW GTI, on the other hand, had weird if mostly minor electrical gremlins that made me lose confidence in it. So as fun as it was to drive, and as impressive as it was in many ways, I ditched it around the end of the warranty period. Friends with VWs have had bad experiences and I can’t see ever trusting one myself. Though now that I mention this I can’t recall for certain if the GTI was built in Germany or not…

As for cars made in Japan — I wish I had a list of the place of manufacture of all the Japanese cars I’ve had over the years. So I can’t really say if the country was related to their various levels of reliability. But I’m darn happy my Limited was built not just in Japan but at Tahara. That’s def confidence inspiring.
