Hi everyone! Can anyone tell me if there is a quick fix to an idle problem with my 88 forerunner? I just drive it to town every once in a while but the last time I did it stalled on me a few times at stoplights. It runs fine if I am giving it gas but when I stop it wants to die. Any advice? I’m very busy right now so I don’t know if I can take it to a mechanic anytime soon

None. Bone Stock. EXCEPT: Brushguard, tow hitch, both welded to the frame. It's good to have friends and a fully equipped garage!
It wants to die, OR the idle drops down lower?

What do you have the idle RPM set to? The reason I ask is Toyota came up with a nifty little bit of code the put in the ECU: When the RPM is above about 1000 or 1100 RPM, and the brakes are engaged, the ECU cuts the injectors until the engine RPM is below the trigger point, then allows them them to function normally again.
Toyota figured that if you were stopping, ie on the brakes, you would want the engine RPM to drop to idle as fast as possible. Saves fuel, allows easier shifting into lower gears, etc. So they put in this nifty little bit of code in the ECU to drop the RPM down fast.

So, make sure the TPS is properly adjusted, especially the idle switch, and the idle RPM is below 1000. It's only supposed to be 800-850, after all.

    Hope this is some help...

I’m not sure what they are set at. My friend is a mechanic and when my dad left me the 4Runner I took it to him to try to find the reason it knocks when I turn sharply. I told him the idol seemed low and he did adjust something a bit. I drove it again since the issue that day and it didn’t stall. I wonder if it being a hot day and me having the a/c on might have effected it.

I had a '86 that had the same problem. Turns out, I had to replace the Throttle Position Sensor and O2 sensor. Problem solved.
