The LC300 was just debuted. The live stream really drove home the point how not Europe/North America oriented this vehicle is when they chose to include only Arabic subtitles. The V8 is gone unsurprisingly, replaced with a line of twin turbo V6 engines that will make more horse power.

Deeply, willfully ugly. Lord I hope the new 4Runner has a completely different design team.

My initial impression was how the new designs feel oddly familiar, like it reminds me of a lot of SUV currently made by other car companies. Some versions of the LC300 remind me of the current Caddy escalade. I also get Ford explorer vibes (for lack of a better word).

I was never a huge fan of giant SUVs like the Sequoia, and this design is no different. Too brash. But I don't think Toyota botched it though, I have had stronger feelings about designs I came to accept. I'm sure in no time we won't really think much of it. Doesn't matter in the end because it wont come to the US in this form.

    It’s not terrible.

I’m OK with the one on the left.

Not that it matters, Toyota is not going to offer it in the US.

I think it looks a little funny in this picture because of the bald top.

Put a flat roof rack up there and it would look pretty good.

If Toyo would make a futurized version of the FJ40 that actually looked like the original (not that monstrosity the brought out a few years ago), was every bit as dependable as the FJ80 (my baby and DD for 20 years), came with 33/35 & 37" factory options, removable top and all the cool stuff we love as options they would DESTROY Jeep for decades and kill the new full size Bronco before it even hits the streets!

Who cares? This never shows everything anyway.
I would buy one of these if Toyota still made them and sold them in the US and didn't charge too much.

    Lol!

They could make these exact trucks, sell them for $70k and be sold out every single year.

What's funny is that I never see these kind of rigs on the trail. They look awesome, but they're pretty primitive as overlanding vehicles.

I’m sure a 40 to 50 year old bone stock Land Cruiser could do this.

The 3 speed trans would make it hard to get to your destination before the weekend was over. Of course, you could just get some ear plugs and send it.

They really aren't overlanding vehicles, but overlanding didn't really exist here back then. It's a newish trend/marketing tool. And being primitive is part of the joy of owning/driving one! Mine is a 1964 and had a three on the tree (now called an anti-theft device and since converted to floor shift), and I drove it to Moab and back from Denver with just a bikini top. Rain and snow and trying to find a gear between 2nd and 3rd on the passes and it was a blast! If you ever think your Runner is underpowered, drive a 40 with an F/2F engine over Vail Pass. I still have this one, and will be getting it back on the road and trails, hopefully this fall. The pics are from Cruise Moab 1999...

Overlanding has existed for a long time (at least 1983), it wasn't a well known term in the US though. I have been aware of it for a while, Covid is what made it take off in the US. I think a FJ40 or the long wheel base would of made a great overlanding vehicle.

I should have been more specific - I should have said that overlanding didn't really exist in the US while FJ-40's like mine were still available for sale in the US. I don't doubt your 1983 date, which closely coincides with when FJ-40 sales ended in the US. I stand by my "newish" statement though. The popularity of overlanding as a term and activity, and companies providing parts/accessories/vehicles, etc directed towards overlanders/ing seems to be relatively recent.

I think its been around for a long while (in the modern form of what we picture). I'm afraid to give specific examples because everyone seems to have a different belief about exactly what is considered overlanding. Is it driving in the wilderness and pitching tents? Camping IMO. Is it sleeping in your vehicle in the wilderness? Does the vehicle have to be modded? The wiki on overlanding calls out the Camel Trophies, yet I don't consider that overlanding.

It looks, cool, sleek design, etc. But it's not really and Land Cruiser.

Kind've like the Mustang Mach-e; cool, innovative design, will probably be a good product. But it's not a Mustang.

Since those who purchase the Land Cruiser nowadays are more likely to be soccer moms than avid off-roaders, the design of the vehicle is going to be oriented toward that market to maximize sales. Clearly, we now see a Land Cruiser series made to compete with other full-size luxury SUVs, such as the Suburban, Yukon Escalade, Navigator, Expedition, upcoming Wagoneer, etc. I'm not sure what the consumer auto markets are in places this thing will actually be sold, but aside from Europe or Japan, it's probably safe to say it is similar here to, say, the Middle East or maybe Australia. It's the natural evolution of product design. Based on the exterior shots of the vehicle, it will be luxurious, and twin V6s will be powerful, I'm sure it will still be reliable, and all that jazz, but in all likeliness, it has lost the rugged minimalism and mechanical simplicity at the core of the Land Cruiser identity.

The land cruiser has been a soccer mom car for a long time, you could say the same about the J60, J80, J100, and J200. The issue is that no one wants to fuck up an 90k dollar vehicle, unless you have serious money to blow fixing stuff that breaks when you take it off road you wont be taking it off road.

You don't see civilian G-wagons going off road for the same reason.

I have my 2020 LC 200 and just sold the wife 2019 for a lot of money , land cruiser has just gone far from its heritage and to spend 100k + now for a good SUV just buy a 4runner while you can .
The new LC300 looks like the Grand Wagoneer , I wish Toyota wound build a FJ40 … the closest I have found was a new Mahindra ROXOR looks and Diesel engine with straight axles .C48EA46B-8CA8-4C19-8ACC-1729968222A2.jpg
